so many roads to ease my soul

About Me

"Personally, I ask four things of a novel: that it make me think, make me laugh, make me horny, and awaken my sense of wonder. If many months have passed in which I've not encountered such a book, I know it's time to try to write one. I take out a sheet of blank paper and simply commence."
--Tom Robbins, in a 1982 Northwest Review interview.
"What is it about owning things? Why do we feel the need to own what we love, and why do we become such jerks when we do? We've all been there, you know: we want something; we own it; and by owning it we change it. When you finally win that girl of your dreams, the first thing you do is try to change her. That little thing she does with her hair, the way she wears her clothes, the way she chews her gum. Until eventually, what you like, what you don't like and what you change all merges into one. Like a watercolor in the rain."
--Chris from Northern Exposure
"Poets remember our dreams, outlaws act them out."
--Tom Robbins, Still Life With Woodpecker
"There's always pain and anger and struggle here. I used to think it was passion, but you know what? It's just drama."
--Nate to Brenda on Six Feet Under
"When you die, ... you will not be happy about having said no. You will be kicking your ass about all the no's you've said. No to that opportunity, or no to that trip to Nova Scotia, or no to that night out, or no to that project, or no to that person who wants to be naked with you because you worry about what your friends will say. No is for wimps. No is for pussies. No is to live small and embittered, cherishing the opportunities you missed because they might have sent the wrong message."
--Dave Eggers
From the land of the midnight sun
where ice blue roses grow
'long those roads of gold and silver snow
Howlin' wide or moanin low
So many roads I know
So many roads to ease my soul

My Interests

I'd like this blown up to a poster:

Zimmy and Suze just look so.... I dunno. Romantic?
God, I hope that "romantic" isn't the word I'm looking for.
&nbsp
Maybe the word is "cool."

I'd like to meet:

Intelligent, engaged people who enjoy good music and a good book and who don't think God wants people to start premptive wars.

Music:

I'm a Deadhead, but the first concert I ever attended was the Ramones, and I've been conflicted ever since.
Gonna take you to the leader of a band:
These two used to be in Luna, and this is great stuff:

Movies:

I like great foreign art films and stupid Hollywood blockbusters. I think the last thing I saw in a theater was V For Vendetta, and I've been watching too many movies lately. The latest: Lawrence Of Arabia. Really. But I really need to get writing.

Television:

I have a TV, but I've ditched my cable. I've been through all of Six Feet Under, and love it, so of course I bought season one of Dexter and watched all that almost stright through...

Books:

All-time favorites, in no particular order:Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (play), Tennessee Williams How To Save Your Own Life, Erica Jong The Stand, Stephen King The Gunslinger, Stephen King (just the first book, I can't get into the rest of the series. It jumps the shark in the second book.) The Hotel New Hampshire, John Irving The World According To Garp, John Irving Dune, Frank Herbert Still Life With Woodpecker, Tom Robbins Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Tom Robbins A Separate Peace, John Knowles Through The Looking-Glass, Lewis Carrol The Name Of The Rose, Umberto Eco Foucault's Pendulum, Umberto Eco Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk The Lord Of The Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien

Heroes:

Aaron Sorkin. Tom Robbins. Tennesee Williams. John Irving. Stephen King (he's doing something right). You might see a trend here.

bonnaroo

I will NOT be camping among 80,000 Metallica fans.  You all have fun burning the portapotties without me. So, where should I go?  Hookahville (obviously), plus where?

I've been saying since the last Bonnaroo that I'm not going in '08 unless it was the second coming of Jerry Garcia. Let me amend that statement: If Led Zeppelin is there, I'm in. Just sayin.  (I...
