The story of The Mellow Bright Band is from the beginning the story of two young lads finding each other at school and discovering their mutual fascination for Oasis and irresistible pop-tunes. Mathias Bergqvist born and raised in Karlstad started playing guitar in his early teens, practising on Nirvana-tunes. He was early on introduced to blues and the sounds of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Chuck Hall. One night there was this unplugged show with Oasis on MTV. The show leaved Mathias greatly inspired and it wouldnt last long until he started writing his own tunes on the guitar.
At the same time, I Erik Segerpalm discovered the greatness of the Britpop-heroes playing their records over and over again in my boy-room in the small town of Forshaga, not far from Karlstad. At the age of 15 I performed Dont Look Back In Anger on a school-show, triggered from this experience I longed for the next opportunity to get on the stage.A couple of months later Mathias and I happened to be placed in the same class at high school in Karlstad. But one year would pass before we really got together, Mathias on the guitar and me on the piano, gathering our early attempts of song-making. A simple demo was recorded in the year of 2000 and a common desire of putting together a band awoke. Classmate, Jim Morrison look alike Kristofer Möller joined on bass and several drummers were rehearsing with us. None of them proved to be good but small shows were still performed during these early years, almost each of them with different people on drums. The first drummer that stayed for a while was a guy a couple of years older than us, Daniel Bergström. A demo was recorded in 2003 consisting of four songs. During the spring and summer that year we performed several gigs and got plenty of good response. But having finished school in Karlstad, everyone sort of felt the same desire of doing something else, somewhere else. The band was laid on ice and more than two years would pass before me and Mathias decided to start playing together again. Kristofer Möller had moved to Gothenburg but Daniel Bergström was still around so we started rehearsing with him again, quickly realizing he wasnt suitable for the band anymore. I came across an old childhood-friend, Martin Lundin who mentioned he could play the drums. Through another friend I found the talented Johan Engström and he became the new bass-player. The old songs were soon replaced by new material, based on Mathias brilliant ability of creating catchy riffs on the guitar. Surfing on his raw and more than ever heavy sound I started screaming out melodies and songs such as Shes Touch and Go and What they used to Say saw the light of the day.One day he called me on the cell like so many times before, eager to show an idea of a new song. I could hear it over the line that this time he had really done it. He started singing Give me a reason to wake up in the morning and I was like: Jesus, thats a fucking hit!The song was soon finished and we recorded the demo Give me a reason to wake up in the morning during three week-ends in April and May. The demo, consisting of six songs, has been praised by the biggest local newspaper and resulted in calls from several smaller labels across the country. The song Give me a reason has been released on two compilations from local HGM Records and American Shut Eye Records.During the summer the band-members changed yet again. Martin Lundin decided to move to another city and Johan Engström also leaved the band. Martins younger brother, Hjalmar Lundin turned out to be exactly what the band needed, a bass-player with the true feeling on stage. Even younger Henrik Sefton, a friend of Hjalmars joined on drums. Both I and Mathias immediately fell in love with his way to play. Last member in was Erik Svensson on second guitar. With Erik in the band weve never sounded better and felt more complete as a group. Weve now played both on Arvikafestivalen and at Gothenburgs finest; Sticky Fingers and things are finally starting to move. Were already planning on recording new stuff, probably in November or something. Stay tuned!Erik Segerpalm, Karlstad, one dark night in September 2006
