Due to massive amounts of friend requests from obviously fake accounts, I've changed my settings such that you have to know my email address to friend me. If you actually know me and want me to friend you, just drop me a message and I'll friend you.
If you don't know me and you'd like to, send me a message - I love to meet new people! But please don't ask to friend me if you don't know me. Believe it or not, I've either met, or gotten to know online, or personally picked out, everyone on my friends list - I am not interested in random solicitations from people I don't know who will never speak to me again.
Bands: I am interested in hearing new music. If you think I might like your band, send me a message (not a friend request) and I will add you to my favorites and check you out later. I don't friend bands just cause they ask for it, it's the same as anything else, I want to get to know you first! If you really are trying to promote your band, why not send a message and tell people about your band, rather than just expecting them to friend you without ever having heard of you?
Unfortunately I think that MySpace has distorted people's idea of what networking sites should be. The whole point of a networking site is to recommend people that you know to other people you know....but if we all friending people we don't know, the system becomes useless.
