Amongst the plethora of underground groups that are striving to make their mark in the growing hip-hop scene and culture of today, a crew of 4 emcees emerged from Orange County, California to “change the face of hip-hop like Mr. Potato head,†as member Freddie J would say. This group goes by the name of ‘Speach Impediments’. The crew, also known by fans as S.I. for short, consists mainly of 4 long time friends who go by: Drewid, Deezie aka Implicit, Syntax Vernac, and Freddie J. Each member is known for having their own distinct hallmark voice, and bringing unique perspective, rhymes and style to the table, which when combined, create an original sound that no other group has ever had or attempted to create. Backed by an elite team of wisely chosen producers, Speach Impediments have broken the mold of old tunes and played out “stereo-types†and have reshaped it; thus creating a new
unique hybrid of old and progressive sounds and songs that can most likely be found in your friend's ipod. When asked about what type of genre Speach Impediments belong to, their answer would be “all of the aboveâ€. With styles ranging from jazzy samples and rhythms coupled with poetic rhyme schemes, to classic “golden age boom-bap†and raw 16 bar verses dressed with punch-lines and catchy hooks, to theatrical story-telling and a bit of everything in-between; S.I has established a well rounded form of music that refuses to be branded.
Since their formation in July of 2003, Speach Impediments have been on the grind non-stop. To date, they have released two studio albums (“The Domino Effect†and “Speach’s Elevenâ€) as well as a 12†Single (“Got Wax?â€) and managed to get themselves signed with a independent Japanese label (Swamp Records) which released their first over-seas album titled “Time Lapse†in January 2007. Speach Impediments have also received rave reviews in publications such as ‘OC Weekly’ and ‘8.5 Magazine’. Their music can be purchased from almost every major on-line retailer such as amazon.com, ughh.com, towerrecords.com, and iTunes, and can be found on shelves at many random mom-and-pop record shops throughout California.
Beyond what they capture inside the studio booth on record, off the record, S.I. is also notoriously known for their amazing, energy-packed live performances. To date, they have done over 200 shows along with an independent tour which they booked and managed themselves. They have showcased their music from local coffee shops, clubs, and bars to well known venues such as House of Blues (Anaheim and Las Vegas), The El Rey Theatre, The Roxy Teater, B.B. King's in Universal City, and Q-Topia (Guerilla Union/Rock The Bells) in Hollywood to name a few. They have shared the stage with renown hip hop artists such as Deux Process (Avitar), Aceyalone (Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed), Wild Child (Lootpack/Stones Throw), Hieroglyphics, Lyrics Born (Latiryx/ Quannum Projects), LMNO (Visionaries/Up Above), KRS-ONE, Canibus, Defari (Likwit Junkies/ Alcoholik Family), Phil Da Agony (Strong Arm Steady), Dilated Peoples, Grouch and Eligh (Living Legends), Talib Kweli, and Sabac Red (Non-Phixion) whom they also just recently featured for their first major collaboration.
To say the least, Speach Impediments have it all. They have the experience, talent and work ethic that it takes to make it in today’s consolidated music industry. S.I. has independently made a name for themselves. With the music and message they represent, it’s only a matter of time before listeners and hip hop consumers world wide pick up and tune in to what they have to say.
