Steve Irwin -
The Nature Calls Crew just wanted to take a minute and say how sorry we all are to hear about Steve "The Croc Hunter" Irwin's death. It really is a sad day for all of us who loved his show and all of the animals he dedicated his life to protecting. He was a one-of-a-kind guy who definitely influenced all of us in our choice of careers. Our thoughts go out to his family.-Nature Calls
THE SCOOP
update:
Pat Spain and his crew of indie/punk filmmakers have created a nature show for the MYSPACE crowd…no, not the creepy stalkers you see on dateline, the throngs of 12-28 year olds who are on-line more than they watch TV. This is a nature show that’s ½ “Croc hunter”, ½ “Family Guy”, ½ “An Inconvenient Truth”…and 150% awesome.Wildlife biologist and Boston native, Pat Spain has two major passions: animals and punk-rock. Pat’s goal in life is to combine these things to create the craziest nature/adventure show the world has ever seen. He easily convinced two up and coming filmmakers, Dom and Colin, and fellow animal enthusiasts, Derek and Anna, to pursue this quest with him, and by their powers combined they are an unstoppable force of nature-show…ness.The footage will have an “indie film” feel to it, the camera-guys will appear in many shots, plenty of side comments and remarks, funny mistakes, animals they tried to catch and didn’t, practical jokes, pop-culture references galore, honesty about what’s happening, and lots of sleep-deprivation induced humor. This motley crew will show people what it’s really like to be out there, finding these creatures and interacting with them without ever putting the animals at risk or exploiting them for any reason. Online journals from the group and games will also enhance the viewer’s good time hanging with the group. It’s all about sharing their experiences, the good, the bad and the funny. While on their search, our team of explorers will completely take advantage of the great outdoors- hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, sailing, surfing, rafting, and most definitely camping. These guys and girl will always be on the move. Viewers will be so entertained by Pat and his pals they won’t be able to leave the room when Nature Calls.
About 3 years ago Pat Spain joined the world of Reality TV via Animal Planet's show King of the Jungle 2. He managed to pull off a 2nd place win and the whole experience solidified his goal of becoming a nature show host, for a new type of nature show. Pat has been doing this stuff his whole life. I won't bore you all with resume style detail, but I'll just say that in school and out, this kid knows animals. He had this idea to modernize what we think of nature shows¦meaning, make them fun and real. Pat decided it was time to put his money where his mouth was and blew all of it (literally, he's broke now) on a once-in-a-lifetime shot.
After talking with some awesome contacts he made while on KOTJ2, it was mentioned that he didn't have all that much hosting time on the show for networks to check-out. So he did what any sane and rational person would do- spent his life savings flying himself, a buddy of his who knew the area, and 2 film-student friends out to the middle of the AZ desert to film what would become a pilot episode of his ideal show-Nature Calls- was born!
The crew consisted of Pat hosting, Derek catching stuff, Dom and Colin filming, and all of them camping in the middle of nowhere and documenting the whole adventure on film! In the 3 nights they were there, these guys managed to hike over 50 miles in the desert, go cliff-jumping, catch the nations deadliest lizard, snake, scorpion, and toad, send one of them to the hospital, film over 17 hours of footage, and have more fun than is possible to express.
While the guys were away in AZ narrowly escaping death, their good friend Anna N. was back in Boston working on future locations for the show, hiking, keeping her array of pets healthy and happy, and dissecting cadavers in her Gross Anatomy lab. Well, we are happy to announce that once this show goes global, Anna will be an official part of the crew! Hiking, camping, catching stuff, putting herself in harms way, getting bitten by animals, dealing with being the only girl surrounded by 4 insane out-doorsy guys…all the stuff a girl dreams of right? Please read more about the whole crew in our blog “Our Prod. Co's description of the show”
You may ask where you can see Nature Calls, and the answer is on our soon-to-be web-site and if you're lucky enough to live in Winthrop, MA, on WCAT Comcast channel 3! We have FINALLY posted our trailer on this site and hope you dig it...if you do, please leave us comments! The greatest thing to come out of that crazy stint in the desert has been that The Crew was able to get signed by the greatest production company on earth, Whom for some leagl stuff we can't mention here...but they are a SICK company based out of Boulder CO. who specialize in all things extreme sports...esp snow related sports...you know, those guys who do all those sick snow-boarding and skiing movies! The guys who practically invented Extreme sports! I hope these clues are good. They rule and we want to thank them again. They will be pitching Nature Calls to a bunch of the top cable networks in the upcoming weeks and Boston Magazine will be running an article about us! We will keep you posted on the progress
so please leave words of encouragement and wish the guys good luck and PLEASE SEND THIS SITE AROUND TO YOUR FRIENDS!!!
