WELL, FROM BEING THE YOUNGEST MEMBER IN MY BALLET CLASS AT NEW YORK'S FAMOUS ALVIENNE SCHOOL OF DANCE (POPULARIZED BY FRED ASTAIRE AND HIS SISTER AND ALSO ACTRESS LISBETH SCOTT MANY, MANY YEARS AGO), I'VE COME TO APPRECIATE MUSIC THROUGH DANCE AND THE HUMAN VOICE. ACTUALLY, I THINK THE OLD BUILDING THAT SCHOOL WAS IN MIGHT HAVE BEEN NEW YORK'S 23RD ST. OPERA HOUSE. I'LL HAVE TO DO SOME RESEARCH ON THAT ONE.....

I ABSOLUTELY GO NUTS FOR WORLD MUSIC AND AM AN AVID COLLECTORS OF MUSIC OF ARGENTINA AND OFTEN FORGOTEN BRAZIL... FOR THE TANGO. MY FAVORITES BY ASTOR PIAZZOLA PRE 1970s. RECENTLY TURNED ON TO A FEW AFRO-URAGUAYAN MUSICAL ARTIST THAT ABSOLUTELY BLEW ME AWAY.
I've always been a big fan of Dakota Staton, from my teens. The first album I bought of her was while I was living in France, I was a teenager and just thought she had such a playful voice singing jazz standards. Recently, a MySpace friend in Pittsburg, Dakota's hometown, informed me of her recent passing. I was very sad to hear this news and regret missing the opportunity of meeting her twice in my lifetime... once in Los Angeles and then New York. Dear "Cherokee" Sweetheart, RIP

Description: Baltimore native Ethel Ennis is a national treasure. Critics have hailed her as "the most accomplished singer performing today". That stature was earned by her magnificent voice, her brilliant compositions, her joyful performances and her collaboration with the finest musicians. She began performing at the age of 15 with a group called Abe Riley's Octet. She first won national recognition for her recording "Lullaby for Losers" in 1955. In 1958, she was selected by Benny Goodman as the female vocalist for his all-star band. Later, she was chosen as a featured singer on the Arthur Godfrey Show. After performing at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival, she appeared with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra on television's "Bell Telephone Hour". She followed those amazing achievements by wowing them at the Monterey Jazz Festival in duets with Joe Williams. She returned to her hometown to perform in concerts with the Count Basie Band and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. During that same period, she shared the bill with Cab Calloway at Harlem's Apollo Theater and played supper clubs and concert halls all over the country. In the seventies, she founded the practice of singing the National Anthem a capella at Richard Nixon's 1973 presidential inauguration. She performed at the White House for Jimmy Carter as well. During the period, she became Baltimore's cultural ambassador, singing Chinese folk songs in Baltimore's sister city of Xiamen, China as well as performing in Rotterdam, Germany. In the 1980's, Ethel opened her own music club, "Ethel's Place" with her husband. They presented the world's greatest jazz musicians and broadcast live concerts to national audiences. They sold the club in 1988, each returning full-time to their artistic pursuits. She has still performed with Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, Stephane Grappelli, Ray Brown, Toots Thielmann, Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan... Frank Sinatra once described her as "my kind of singer". A Downbeat reviewer once said of Ethel: "Her voice runs deep, exuding the personality of a sage who has lived many lives." Listen to this joyful song and have a pleasant trip! Los Angeles Jazz singer based in Hollywood, CA - transplant from New York City. Love expressing myself through music and surprisingly House music a new genre is becoming very special in the arena. Looking forward to traveling across the pond this year, a myriad of new studio projects with my musical partner Balage Antal.Special thanks to fans supporting our music. HERE'S MY TAKE ON THINGS: I WANT TO KEEP BELIEVING THAT WE NEED MORE TOLERANCE AND DIVERSITY IN THIS WORLD. BY NOW EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT WE ARE MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT. EDUCATION IS FOREVER. IGNORANCE CAN END RIGHT NOW ALL FOR A BETTER WORLD. MUSIC IS UNDOUBTEDLY A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.... AND I'M READY TO BET ON IT. I'M A FIRST GENERATION AMERICAN OF CARIBBEAN ANCESTRY (ST. CROIX [Danish W.I. now U.S. soil], ST. EUSTACIA, ST. KITTS, BARBADOS, TORTOLA, ANGUILA.... and more). MY BEING OF A RICH AFRICAN HERITAGE IS THE PROUDEST THING I CAN SAY ABOUT MYSELF. I HAD A TOTAL FRIENDSHIP WITH MY MOTHER, WHO JUST CROSSED OVER... WHO TAUGHT ME TO EMBRACE LIFE. MY DAD DIED, WELL ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW HOW THE SAYING GOES, "OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE, THEY SIMPLY FADE AWAY." BOTH MY PARENTS HAD THINGS THEY STILL WANTED TO DO. I'M A NEW YORK CITY TRANSPLANT, NOW LIVING IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA..... I'D PREFER BOTH WORLDS - BEING BI-COASTAL WOULD SUIT ME JUST FINE. SINGING?.... IT'S AS FREEING AS THE FIRST TIME YOU SAT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR AND TOOK OFF. I LIKE TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO FIND GOD AND PRAY FOR PEACE. I SPEAK OF BEING VERY TOLERANT; HOWEVER, I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PATIENCE WITH FEARFUL PEOPLE.
I HAVE FEW REGRETS.... WELL ONE IS, WHEN ACCEPTING AN INVITATION TO VISIT JOHNNY OTIS AT ELDORADO STUDIOS (NEAR THE CORNER OF HOLLYWOOD AND VINE, JOHNNY (ONE OF THE VERY NICEST PEOPLE I'VE EVER MET WHEN I WAS NEW TO THIS CITY), ASKED ME IF I SANG. TOO SHY (WELL FOR A MOMENT, AT THAT TIME) I ANSWERED "NO" WHEN ACTUALLY, THAT'S WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO DO. I COULD TELL THAT HE WAS REVVING UP TO ASK ME TO SING SOMETHING RIGHT THEN, ANYTHING...THAT WAS IN THE MID 60s. AH HAH, WELL IT'S AL RIGHT NOW. IT'S ABOUT 40 YEARS LATER AND I'VE GOT SOME MAKING UP TO DO. OH YEAH!
ANOTHER REGRET WAS WHEN I WAS INVITED BY FAMILY FRIEND FRANCES WHITE TO TAKE A RIDE WITH HER TO VISIT A VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF HERS WHO WAS IN THE HOSPITAL.... I FOUND SOMETHING ELSE THAT I THOUGHT WAS IMPORTANT AND PAST UP THE CHANCE TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF WONDERFUL LORAINE HANSBURY BEFORE SHE DIED.SOMETIMES WE THINK OF MANY REGRETS IN OUR LIVES.... HEY, MAKE UP FOR IT THE BEST WAY YOU CAN THEN LET IT GO.
