Kitchen Sink Music is a not for profit arts organization dedicated to presenting classical music in context with other contemporary music. Founded on the belief that good music will thrive if presented in an approachable and affordable setting, KSM seeks to build new audiences by creating new environments to experience classical music. To date, we have organized concerts that bring classical music into bars and clubs all over NYC. This summer we are planning an East Coast tour.
We also run an after school music program for at risk youth in Harlem in partnership with Friends of the Children NY . In our first semester we teamed up with Juilliard trained pianist Alpin Hong to teach kids the basic tenets of music. From discussing the Harry Potter theme to Beethoven, Alpin and a group of guest musicians including a violinist, percussionist, guitarist & cellist taught the kids how to interact with music. The program culminated in a performance featuring both Alpin and the kids, who sang songs they themselves wrote.
Our Spring semester will see us head to the studio where the kids can continue to explore writing and listening to music, learn about the recording process, and have the opportunity to record their work. Please check our website for further details.
