Music should strike fire from the heart of man-LvB

About Me

In 2000 Darren Bloom moved from his native Los Angeles to London to study composition with Edwin Roxburgh, Timothy Salter, and William Mival and conducting with Neil Thompson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. Whilst a student at the RCM Darren won the 2003 Composition Competition. After graduating with a BMus (Hons) in 2004 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music to study for a Masters Degree in Composition with Brian Elias and to further his conducting studies with Christopher Austin. Darren graduated from the RAM with Distinction having won several prizes including the Mosco Carner Prize and a Diploma of the RAM. During his studies he also received significant additional tutelage from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Julian Anderson, Simon Bainbridge and George Benjamin and Philip Cashian. Since completing his Masters Degree Darren has become the first composer in the RAM’s history to receive the Manson Composition Fellowship two years in a row – a role which brings him continuing concert opportunities and responsibilities that include teaching and assessing student work. Darren’s music has recently been performed across the UK, United States and Europe including a performance of Sleeper by the Ossian Ensemble at the York Late Music Festival 2007 and performance in the Eroica Hall, Vienna of his 2 Planes for solo piano by Jovanni de Pedro. Darren's music has been performed by many world-class ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta and BBC Singers. He was recently appointed Composer-in-Residence for the thriving music department at Forest School, Snaresbrook. As a conductor Darren has worked with the London Sinfonietta as an assistant to Christopher Austin and was principal conductor with the Ossian Ensemble at the 2007 Soundings Festival celebrating music by living Austrian and UK composers. Darren is a founding member and Associate Composer for the Ossian Ensemble, an acclaimed virtuoso chamber ensemble made up of award-winning soloists based in London. The Ossians are known for their highly theatrical concerts and are rapidly garnering a profile based on visionary and forward-thinking programming. Darren lives in London with his wife Emily Bloom, a virtuoso recorder player for whom he’s written several works. ------------------------------------------- Here's a 1min animation that I scored whilst a student at the RAM. It features a Fire Engine, a Soprano, and a Double Bass. 'Thuck' is the sound a missile makes when hitting it's target...
