Haters may call him cocky, his fans may call him a lyrical genius, but there’s no denying the intoxicating swagger of J Young Da Million $ Kid. With a heavy underground mixtape circuit under his belt, this versatile and respectable lyricist is not only a breathe of fresh air, he’s proving that he’s in the rap game for the long run, A concoction of J Young’s God given talents and his love of music, mixed with the admiration of his peers, helped catapult his dreams into a reality.
With rapping, songwriting, and acting as his forte, this triple threat received recognition from his high school classmates for his freestyling capabilities. Being a passionate and ambitious performer, he utilized this acclaim to earn the title of freestyle champion in 2003 at Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 radio station. His reign at age 17 for the year presented him an opportunity to refine his distinctive lyrical flow, as well as generate a buzz worthy name on Hot 107.9’s Cocoa Brotha’s 6-10pm weekday show. With this new found fame in the palm of his hands, an infamous battle between J Young and Cassidy left fans yearning for more. The battle received over 300,000 plays on Youtube.com as well as thousands of other hip hop websites. J Young’s undeniable lyricism landed him his first mixtape debut on Cocoa Brotha’s “The Remix.†This was only the beginning.
Da Million $ Kid’s true potential to sit amongst kings was showcased at 2003’s Rock The Mic tour, hosted by Just Blaze and headlined by 50 Cent and the king of hip hop, Jay-Z. Other big name artists on the tour included Missy Elliot and fellow New York native Fabolous. His captivating performance cemented his credibility in the rap game, crowning him, once again, freestyle champion, proving he deserved the prestigious and polished trophy sitting on his fireplace mantel. His rapid flows were then exhibited at Atlanta’s Music Midtown in 2004 opening for Chi-Town’s own lyrical phenomena Twista and at Morehouse College’s 2004 homecoming, opening for Atlanta’s own platinum recording artist Young Jeezy. To add onto his performance list J Young also opened for Lil Jon and T.I. only contributing to his excusable arrogance.
J Young’s compelling history of putting his musical peers to shame took over the underground mixtape scene validating why his fans love him. He collaborated with Worldwide Legacy’s Mike Pratt giving him a compilation of 9 mixtapes which other newcomers could only fantasize about. He was also featured on “3 The Hard Way Series†discs 1-3, “Hell In Harlem†parts 1 and 2, “Tough Talk,†“Stop Snitchin Stop Bitchin,†and DJ Scorpio’s mixtapes. Well known artists such as The Game, Fabolous, Mase, Young Jeezy, and the Diplomats also blessed these mixtapes, putting out over 80,000 units in the streets. J Young’s “What The People Want†mixtape solidified that he was exactly that. His heavy underground rep in the U.K. and Canada propelled him to brand his most recent mixtape to come, “Welcome To Greatness,†with his captivating confident flow.
This not-so newcomer demonstrated his versatility as the overall package with freestyles, videos, and official LRG clothing company theme song on Volume 6 of the Justo 2006-2007 award winning Cheddar DVDs. The featured “Artist On The Grind†of Cheddar DVDs Volume 3 laid down an unbelievable freestyle and video for his street single at the time, “Harlem Blues.†His natural hosting skills are apparent on Cheddar DVDs Volumes 7 and 8 where he couldn’t help but to jump start these videos with an energetic intro song and video. J Young fine tuned his hosting abilities on Cheddar’s 2007 “Special Edition Ozone Awards†DVD with appearances from Lil Wayne, Jim Jones, Jay-Z, and Nelly to name a few.
As a young man well within his element, J Young freestyled and was interviewed on “Cocaine City†Volume 3, “What’s Poppin?,†“Lick Off A Shot,†“Show You How To Hustle,†“Skrilla,†and “Slap†DVD, which he graced the cover of. He also released a video for “One Way Ticket†on the “Hood Affairs†DVD where he collaborated with Mase and the Teamsters. On the “Hood Luv†DVD J Young hosted actor Jason Weaver’s “ATL†movie premiere party showcasing yet another original freestyle. He was also featured as the “Artist On The Rise†in Juice Magazine. His substantial achievements also include a featured article in 2006 AUC newspaper editorial and pictures in 2006’s Ozone Magazine. Who knew this up and coming star would have so many tricks up his sleeve?
Wearing many hats as an entertainer, his natural acting talent in his “Stomp The Yard†cameo and lead role in the upcoming HBO series “The ‘A’†proves he’s determined to make it big. The show which is set to air in 2008 / 2009 is loosely based on J Young’s real life thus far, including guest appearances from Clifton Powell and actress / model Eva Pigford. Moving at the speed of light J Young is continuing his grind. His recent accomplishments include the popular hit single “Get Money†receiving over 200,000 plays on MySpace within a few months.
