Matt’s musical life began at age 4 when he was given a walkman and a Beatles cassette. His interest was further encouraged by his father -also a guitarist- who bought him his first electric guitar a few years later. At first, Matt only practiced intermittently, but with the guidance of guitar teacher, Ed Cedar, he was soon exploring all varieties of music and training his musical ear by listening and playing along. It wasn’t long before his curiosity led him to the bass.
Recordings of jazz greats like Charlie Mingus and Ron Carter inspired Matt to continue learning the way of the bass. He played bass in the Princeton High School Studio Band while continuing to write his own songs for Short Notice with drummer/co-founder Mike Golisano. Short Notice produced one album in 2001, Warning Sign Ahead.
Though Short Notice's days came to an end, Matt was still eager to play. He developed his sense of rhythm, feel and technique for both the guitar and the bass while collaborating with other local musicians for band projects like the Jon Lall Band, the NosmoKings -who played one show at the Daytona in Maryland- and even a cover band. However, when he was recruited to play bass for Selkow in 2005 he was excited to work in a serious and professional group. Though he loves being part of the Selkow experience he still writes his own music and loves jamming and recording with anyone with a passion for art.
