Remember To Always Keep It Pimpin And Don't Forget To Check Out My Music!L.A. native CALI PUDD has been through different stages as an artist, “paid my dues now its time to wear the shoes.†Hip Hop found him at a young age and ever since he could remember he wanted to rap. Inspired by west coast greats DJ Quick, NWA, and Snoop he recollects watching the Juke Box where he would wait for people to order videos to study the game. He did his first show at 68th street elementary school. There he rocked the mic and hooked up with friends Mista Cleave, Malachi and Tobias R.I.P.
They decided to form a group called YBP (Young Black Playas) recording songs from a speaker to a tape recorder, until one Christmas Pudd’s mother bought him a karaoke machine. They spent numerous hours recording song after song, until Malachi’s big brother Daebo paid for there studio time. He also got them a manager and she began to book shows for them all through the city. The exposure was good and the different venues were paying them but naive and unaware, their manager was pocketing the money. Personality conflicts and bad management caused the group to break up. Still focused they continued to click up and do songs.
PUDD’s style is a clever blend of natural raw talent, that relates to the general public. It overlaps through the different barriers of rap making him elite and universal. The birth of his style was strictly street rapping about his surroundings and life in the hood. Then in high school he was bussed to Pacific Palisades, where he adapted to diversity and new hip hop culture. It was there where he picked up on battle rap and serving Mc’s. Mixing the two together was venomous, every cipher at nutrition and lunch he made a name for himself serving anyone who dared to rap.
After graduating from High School it was a struggle, his original plan was to put together a demo package and shop it to all the labels. He was out of his mother’s house and in the real world. Staying focus on music and at the same time making ends meet was almost impossible. He sacrificed working little odd jobs but the pay was inadequate. Broke with no money he found refuge to the streets.
He learned the drug trade and with little response from record companies he planed to go independent. The goal was to hustle up enough money to start a label. The drug game was a dirty business, he first hand witness all type of shady dealings of the under world. Close friends, family, dealers, gangsters, prostitutes, attics and pimps use to say that he was too talented to be out in the streets and was “jeopardizing greatness.†Deep inside he had a voice telling him to do right but with his stubbornness and will to keep going he ignored these voices.
One day reality hit like a ton of bricks. Near death experiences and penitentiary chances forced him to want to change his life. Using mind power and strategy he plotted coming up with a master plan to make it
Tired of paying for studio time and relying on other people to record, he began investing in studio equipment. He learned how to produce his own music but there was one problem, he couldn’t get his music to sound like the professionals. As a result he enrolled in Los Angeles Recording School where he learned how to work various out board gear, software systems and boards. This gave him gun powder with his ability to write killer rhymes, now he was able to record and mix his own shit.
As a requirement of the school he had to complete an internship. He found an internship at universal music group. He was not to keen on working for free but the experience there was priceless. He made key friends and learned important rules to the game. At first long hours was spent working on tedious projects. He felt like he was hotter than most of the artist projects he worked on. Then he started to think maybe they were doing something that he wasn’t. That is when he realized that the music industry is not all about skills it‘s about power and numbers.
How many units can you sale? It all comes down to dollar and cents, almost all of the successful artist in the music industry already made a buzz before their major deal. With the help of the label they were exposed to a broader audience with already having an existing fan base. That way the label is taken a smaller risk and the chances of them capitalizing is greater. That is when he came up with idea of Signed By The Streets. A Hot to Death mix tape, rapping over industry beats with a few banging original tracks. Alongside Mista Cleave and other featured guest, instead of shopping his music to the labels he shopped his music to the street.
Taking the road less traveled and keeping his eye on the prize CALI PUDD is more than a rapper. He is new breed of a MC dope, fresh, smart, street, handsome, business minded, and knowledgeable. Putting all these different elements together in one is unheard of, making him a force in the industry to be to be reckoned with. Every move he made in his life was strictly for the love of music. In his own words,
†With no regrets the only thing that I am bitter about is the love ones that are not here to see it with me. I do this for all my falling soldiers and fans. As long as the streets keep showing support I promise to keep putting out real music.â€..
