Happy Couples Never Last was brought to life back in 1998 on a steady diet of college loans, ramen noodles, Poison Idea records, and pulling double-shifts as a dishwasher at the University cafeteria. Since our humble beginnings, the label has grown to the point where we now have approximately 40 releases under our belts from bands of almost every different genre (The Dropscience, Pageninetynine, Racebannon, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower etc.)
Happy Couples is a punk rock label and we put out records according to punk rock ethics. We decided very early on that since punk rock is about pushing boundaries that we would make a conscious effort to avoid the rut of becoming a "one trick pony" label. Punk rock is about so much more than just trying to find one musical formula and riding it into the ground. Punk should be threatening. Punk should stand against the white male hetero boys' club that dominates every other music scene. When I started HCNL, I wanted to keep it true to the punk ethics that I feel pounding in my heart. It's no exaggeration to say that punk/hardcore music saved my life and this label is my way of giving something back to the scene that has given so much to me. Hopefully that shines through in the records that we put out.
