About Me

Visual art and music have always been intertwined for me, and they are my twin passions. I had my professional epiphany in a darkroom, watching a b/w picture of the New York Dolls' Sylvain Sylvain come up in the developer -- THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE! I started taking my Canon Ftb to clubs as well as bigger shows. I ran the film and made the prints in my college darkroom. Eventually the performers I photographed asked me to make pictures of them offstage, as well. Fast forward... I've been a professional photographer for twenty years. Pictures for the arts and music industry are my specialty, including studio (both photo studio and recording studio), location, live/stage and tour-documentary images. Despite a long love affair with the incredible qualities of light on film, I fell head over heels for digital image making, and the infinite capacities it offers. At the same time, I still adore shooting TriX with my Hasselblad 500C (circa '63). I create photo-driven graphic design work (including CD packages), and I periodically teach, and write for publication.

My Interests

I'm a fine artist as well as a commercial artist, and I show my work in gallery exhibitions, as well as on record covers. I am passionate about pictures. I love to collaborate, and to create and produce exhibitions and events with other artists. I love to travel, to read, to write; I love conversational salons, and arts events like theatre, films and performances. I love the water. I'm an Aquarian, and a chocoholic. If you'd care to buy me a martini, make it vodka (dirty, straight up) with two olives.

I'd like to meet:

Folks who need compelling pictures and want to work with a professional who's experienced, skilled, patient and good-natured. I love to collaborate. I work with artists directly, and also with labels, publications, management companies and agents. You can see samples of my work in my "top twelve" -- all these folks have had me create their pictures! Then, look under "view more pics" on my page, to see a selection of images from my portfolio. You can see some examples of my concert work on Doug Pettibone's Pics page -- www.myspace.com/dougpettibone. Music:

Six or eight times a year, I host Loft Concerts in my midwest studio. These shows are the artist's-loft version of a house concert. It's fun and very satisfying to provide an alternative venue for musicians to perform and interact with their audience. And I love having all that great creative energy in my studio. Most of "my" artists are singer-songwriters; some of the folks I've had the pleasure of hosting include Justin Townes Earle, Kevin Gordon, Gurf Morlix, Sam Baker, Joy Lynn White, Phil Lee, Rosie Flores, Amelia White and Shawn Camp. My favorite kinds of music? Alt-country and Power-pop.

Movies:

The brilliant filmmaker Heidi Spencer has made a new documentary about me and my work, "Picturing the Music." It includes five vignettes, working with music folks, and it will be posted and ready for viewing soon! Stay tuned!!

Television:

Opiate of the masses (wait -- that was religion)

Books:

Love 'em. Always looking for recommendations.

Heroes:

Free thinkers, artists, writers, performers, musicians: anyone who tries to make their own way in the world.
