About Me

The Sheffield based band Hula was founded in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fisch and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, the Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt, the notorious Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) and Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko), and after the replacement of Alan Fisch by Nort (both drummed for the Cabs), Hula recorded the impressive album Murmur. Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals were blended together into a unique white funky sound.Hula recruited John Avery as a bass player. A bass player was necessary for the exciting live shows with lots of video material. Hula continued to bring out danceable 12 inches and more experimental albums. With this line-up Hula was more or less successful. International tours were made. Radio sessions for VPRO and John Peel were recorded and broadcasted. Being a support act for Depeche Mode implied performing live in Wembley Arena for huge crowds. After Nort left the band in 1986 the music changed, but still remained interesting. Later on Mark Albrow quit. Then their record company Red Rhino went bankrupt. The last Hula record (now on Wax Trax) was a Jimmy Hendrix cover of Voodoo Chile. The 12 inch did not sort out the desired effect and Hula broke up....Cut and pasted and continued on www.soureden.com MyGen Profile Generator

Influences: Making music in Sheffield in the late 70's and early 80's was a such a fantastic thing for all involved, especially if you had a synthesizer...The Human League were the leaders of the pack closely followed by Cabaret Voltaire, They Must Be Russians, Clockdva, Artery, Im So Hollow, The Negatives, Salon Graph, Vice Versa (who later went on to become ABC), 2.3, The Comsat Angels, the Box, Vendino Pact, Chakk, RuthJoy, Pulp, Disease, and loads more ...Then there was Hula...Influenced by all that was happenning and more..The Industrial decline of our city, unemployment, C.N.D, John Peel..Doing it for yourself, arty farty film makers...Hippy communes, anarchy and everything else going on..A melting pot of energy...Uptown steel bashers meet downtown eyebrows with echo units..Electrophyde and fucked and funked up dance beats melding African sounds mixed and mashed with 808 drum machines and Mark banging out tape loops whilst simultaneously scratching records with a record arm he had taken off an old deck and fitted a jack plug to the other end of the wire so he could literally scratch the vinyl...Ron was into William Burroughs, hypnotic guitar and wet dreams..Nort used to dream of making films like David Lynch...Al Fisch did some great work with The Cabs and is now a successful music engineer and producer...Chris Brain became a pervy vicar...Mark Brydon went on to make Moloko...Alan Watt ..We don't know...John Avery now makes theatrical (Forced Entertainments) and film soundtracks...Mark works for Sheff Hallam University audio visual dept...Ron works for Hallam Uni too, lecturing sound and visuals at The Northern Media School as well as working on his own soundtracks for films, noticeably "Jelly Dolly" by Sue Gent...Nort is working with his band Yonni at Epic Head Studios, as well as drumming with The Cherokees...
