About Me

Hello there! My name is Michael Vargason but my friends all call me Varg.. or the Varg... or Vargy! i started playing the coffee cans my mom would throw out because i liked and wanted to play the drums. I would cut both ends of the metal cans out and then put the plastic lid back on for a head. My parents said "First you will have to learn to play the Clarinet." So i took it to school where the Music nun showed me the finger positions, the notes, rests, and there values and how to read from the charts. She also told me a frightning tale of the lost souls and bleached bones that lie on the road to musical stardom! All i wanted was to play the drums! Scheeeze! So i took my lessons and while she was out scaring others from peeking in the windows i would mount the crudy little trap set that her and i put together from old parts, stands and left over pieces. There my beat wrangling began. i played on pillows, plates, old hat boxes whatever untill they {my parents} brokedown and bought me my first real trap set. A used Slingerland Blue sparkle 4 piece with a working hi-hat and one ride/crash cymbal. Now i had allready been playing the guitar for quite some time using my Dad's flat top and then getting a smaller version for Christmas when i was about 4 or 5. So i new where my hands should go i just needed to get bigger so my hands would touch the frets i needed to reach. Sometimes me and Mother Mary {The Nun} would lock the door to the "Music House" as it was called and Rock out! She would keep the beat on the drums and i would play guitar or whatever. Other times i'd play the drums and she would rock the piano. Mind you this was intended to be Clarinet practice. My singing was started as soon as i could speak before that i would just hum along to the melody. We would sing along to the hits of the day or records my folks would buy or the radio. In the town there were a host of fine musicians that you could hear practicing as you walked down the street. I thought all the world was this way and i marveled at the thought. Art was also allways on my mind and i drew and painted as soon as i could manipulate the brush and pencil. It was a glorious time to be alive. The new music called Rock and Roll was just being explored as a legitimate form of music. Most of the respectable classically trained musicians scoffed and called it noise, monkey work or diabolos "sounds of the devil". But i heard it as a fresh new way of expressing the immediate, and so it still is today when executed correctly that is. And i dreamt of a time when classical and all forms of music would meet. Like a great musical Pow Wow of power and prowess. So my school days were filled with the thought of the future and how it might sound. i practiced drew and dreamt untill i could persuade others to see and share in my musical experience. The smartest kid i knew did not play guitar and really did not want to, so i had to coach him and plead with his father to buy him an instrument and then we did the same for another friend who would come to play the bass guitar although he was not musically inclined. We became "Sunmurmur" and the three of us would play out side the Nunery on lunch hour for the other kids at school. Then we became the "Bilbo Baggins Blues Band" A heavy meat all band, yes i said "All Meat" that was what we called it way before Steppin Wolf or Black Sabbath, and we wrote a song called "Bird of Pollution". We played at school talent shows and then we would rent halls to put on our own dances. But we were to young to play in bars for money. So we went country as the "Country Patriots" and were then allowed to play in the bars with a schaparone and our parents. I was 9 or ten now and could hit the low Johnny Cash notes with no problem or sing like Franky Valle and hit the high notes on "Big girls don't cry". We packed em in and life was good. But as allways i wanted to ROCK! and this was not getting it! So we went to a four piece and then a five piece band called the "Blue Horizon" where i played drums sang lead vocals, played the violin that i got from my Grand father "Chromium" and fronted the group. We toured the five state midwestern region for 7 years winning respect and aplumb. Untill life gave us different directions and we took them. i went to Colorado to join a band called the "SpireZ" with some friends from Iowa who had moved out there and needed a frontman. We recorded and played all over the front range. I then joined "Geppetto" which later became "Stickman" in Broomfield Colorado where we built "Gross Doris Studio" and recorded "Music for the Massess" 10 years before the depeche mode example. The music was progressive and the musicians were top notch and tight! i was in musical heaven working with these fellows, we played the Boulder Amplitheatre and a film was made but im not sure where that has gone to. After that i played in "Leger Domain" then the "Teetering Slabs" then just "The SlabZ" then "Nocturnal Doctrine", "Savant","Cogent" and now the "RuthlesS OrfanZ" Back in Iowa i built a studio called "DaD'S Ear" where i write and play all the parts. And of course the cd's artwork was also created by me and an illustration i found in a old church song book given to me by guess who??? Mother Mary Superior! Freaky HuuuMMMMM??? Ok now for the promo blurb....................................................... ......"ExamisH" The 9 song cd from the RuthlesS OrfanZ fronted by multi-instrumentalist Michael Vargason. "The sound is vintage with a twist of the progressive." Varg said. "The OrfanZ sound is musician driven and a lot of fun to play." The OrfanZ play a mixture of styles and sympathies to evoke nostalgia and toe tapping which eventually leads to singing along with the words and wanting for more.
