Hi there. My name is Mike Torpie, although most people have been calling me "Michigan Mike" since the very first night that I landed in Colorado back in '92. Since then I have done a heck of a lot with my life. I've booked live entertainment in and around Nederland, Colorado for about a dozen years now... something which essentially kick-started the town's music scene "back in the day" and certainly also helped boost Boulder and Denver's scenes back then as well. A lot of bands that are currently red hot insofar as popularity met thru gigs that I put together up here. Heck, I was booking The Motet when they were still known as "The Dave Watts Motet" and the guys from Yonder Mountain String Band back before they even had a name!!

One of my biggest claims to fame is that of being the founder of NedFest (aka the Nederland Music & Arts Festival )... an annual, outdoor, musically diverse event that features bluegrass, jazz, world music and many other genres. It happens the last weekend in August here in Nederland, and this summer will mark the 10th Annual NedFest, which has been no small feat.
Some of the people who have performed at NedFest include Dr. John, Sam Bush Band, Keller Williams, Yonder Mountain String Band, Victor Wooten, Merl Saunders & His Funky Friends, Charile Hunter Quartet, Stanley Jordan, Vince Herman & other members of Leftover Salmon, Garaj Mahal, Tony Furtado, The Motet, Robert Walters' 20th Congress, Benevento/Russo Duo, Vinyl, The Slip, Melvin Seals & JGB, Rob Wasserman, The Big Wu, Shanti Groove, Tony Trischka, Joe Craven, Papa Mali, Kan'Nal, Skerik & Black Frames, Eric McFadden & Wally Ingram, Paul McCandless, Cecil 'P-Nut' Daniel, Jamie Janover, Albino!, Spoonfed Tribe's Weapons of Mass Percussion, Wookiefoot, Cabaret Diosa, Phix, ThaMuseMeant, Pete "Dr. Banjo" Wernick, Helen & Nick Forster, Armando Zuppa, Open Road and many more. See the left side of this page for the complete list.

I'm also the creator and organizer of Nederland Acid Jazz ... which is a weekly, all-improv jam session that boasts an always-changing rotation featuring the finest jazz and funk musicians from Colorado and beyond. The Monday night tradition began in July 1996 and ran until the end of August 2004, and then picked back up in March of 2008. Pretty much no two ensembles are ever the same, and sometimes the players have never met before gig night, yet the quality of musicianship is always friggin' amazing. It is, BY FAR, the most popular night to go out in Nederland. Click to see the impressive and (almost) complete archive of all 446+ Ensembles & the Musicians who played!

Oh, and I'm also an elected official serving a four-year term on the Nederland Board of Trustees (aka the Town Board here in Ned), which is kind of a big deal as well. I feel it's important to be a good person and to be community oriented.

My Best Friend!!
MOUNTAIN GIRL

My Interests

Music; Festivals; Beer; People; Concerts; Camping; Hiking; Dancing; Disc Golf; Travel; Movies; The Great Outdoors; Computers; Local Politics; Beautiful Women; Being involved in my small-town community; Meeting new people; Hanging with friends; Organizing festivals, concerts and events; and most important... My best friend... a Saint Bernard named Mountain Girl.

I'd like to meet:

Who I'd like to meet?? People. People in the music biz; People who live in my area; People I already know; People I used to know; People who are fans of my festival; People who play music professionally and/or for fun; People who give good conversation; People who want to hang out over a beer; People who like watching movies; People who want to throw a round of disc golf; People involved in small town politics; Whatever. I mostly use this site for business, but I guess I'd like to meet a beautiful young woman who is interested in finding a kind and loyal (and amazingly handsome) man to spend time with. If that happens to be you, please don't be afraid to be straightforward because I am sometimes clueless and can totally miss the signal.

Music:

Music is always better when it's live! I like most genres of music and dislike very little. Some favorites include, but are certainly not limited to, Bluegrass, Jazz, World, Funk, Folk, Flamenco, Samba, Ska, Reggae, Celtic, Cajun, Zydeco, Gospel, Old Timey, Latin, Afrobeat/Afropop, older Blues, some older Rock, and a little Hip Hop. I don't really like metal, thrash or punk, and I'm not much into country - although some of the older country stuff, the classics, are cool.... I just don't like that twangy-vocal stuff. And no opera or chamber music please.

Check out Nederland Acid Jazz . It's the shizza!!

Movies:

Current Favorite:
Shaun of the Dead
Current Runner Up:
Zeitgeist - A FREE online Stream! Everyone with an open mind should watch this 3-part documentary about the history of organized religion, 9/11, financial institutions and their involvement with big-government, and where we, as a society and as a planet, are headed.
I own a huge movie collection which includes: 28 Days Later, A Beautiful Mind, American Beauty, American Spendor, Bad Santa, Baraka, Baseketball, Being John Malkovich, The Big Labowski, Blade Runner, The Butterfly Effect, Cannibal (The Musical), Contact, The Count Of Monte Cristo, Dawn Of The Dead 2004, Dazed and Confused, Deer Hunter, Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Fargo, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, Fight Club, Forest Gump, Gattaca, Go, Good Will Hunting, Goodfellas, Groundhog Day, Identity, Jackie Brown, Joe Dirt, Kill Bill 1 & 2, The Matrix, Memento, Million Dollar Baby, Mystery Men, O' Brother Where Art Thou, Office Space, Old School, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Pulp Fiction, Requiem For A Dream, Reservoir Dogs, Run Lola Run, Scarface, Scrooged, Secondhand Lions, Shrek, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Sling Blade, Solaris, Spun, Star Wars, Sweet and Lowdown, Team America: World Police, There's Something About Mary, Three Amigos, The Usual Suspects and lots more.

Television:

I don't have TV right now but when I am around it I dig South Park, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and The Simpsons.

Books:

Most recent read: The DaVinci Code (finally got around to reading it - glad I did.) I read a lot, but not necessarily books or stories... more music industry- or local politics-related stuff. I also read a lot of random stuff online as well (your myspace page?)... and I guess I do have a subscription to Relix Magazine and Newsweek.

Heroes:

My Dad was a great role model, for sure. Beyond that - Some influences that kind of helped steer me into the music biz include: Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, Vince Herman and Leftover Salmon, Mishawaka Ampitheater, Telluride. A few others that influenced me a little less directly, but certainly influenced some of my influences include: Hot Rize, New Grass Revival. Also gotta give props to Bill Grahm (the promoter - not the religious dude).
