I am here for Friends

About Me

Professional troublemaker with a law degree, political views guaranteed to annoy if not actually outrage both Left and Right, who has run away from the world and sought refuge amongst the piney woods of East Texas with his couterie of 16 cats and one very silly dog where he manages his investments over the internet, and otherwise spends his time goofing off, watching TV, playing computer games, cooking, and contemplating his navel.

When I'm not here in Texas I can often be found in Paris, my favorite city in the world. Most nights you'll find me in smokey bars like Aux Trois Mailletz in the 5th arr. drinking cheap red wine, singing the occassional Sinatra number, and pretending that its 1932

My Interests

Music, Politics, Cats, Dogs, Carpentry, Cooking, Theology, International Relations, Travel, History

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who likes to talk, has interesting ideas and the ability to articulate them.

Music:

Blues, Jazz, Folk and anything that Frank Sinatra or Mel Torme ever sang.

I have had the good luck at various times to have jammed/sung/sat in with a wide variety of musicians and groups including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, John Hammond Jr., Dave Van Ronk, Mike Seeger, The Country Gentlemen, The Bluegrass Boys, Ian and Sylvia, Tom Rush, Frank Sinatra, Big Al Dupress and Gerry Mulligan.

Movies:

Yojimbo, Seven Samauri, Citizen Kane, Stagecoach, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Robin Hood, Dawn Patrol, The Magnificent Seven, Tora Tora Tora, The Great Escape, Potemkin.

Television:

House, NCIS, The Unit, Grey's Anatomy, Law and Order (all variations), CSI, Bones, Criminal Minds, This Old House, Dr. Who, Torchwood, Psyche, Monk, The Closer.

Books:

(Some recent reads) The Struggle for Europe, The Hope, October Horse, Paris Was Yesterday.

(All time favorites) Alice in Wonderland, Collapse of the Third Republic, The Great Railway Bazaar, Riding the Iron Rooster, Larousse Gastronomique, Strategy, The Swiss Family Robinson, A Distant Mirror, The Guns of August, A Year in Provence.

As you can see, my taste runs to non-fiction and the fiction I read is not the sort ot thing included in the Great Books of the Western World.

To be honest, I've never managed to get thru a work of fiction by any of the recognized big name authors. Though I've tried my level best the fact is that Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, etc etc put me to sleep.

Heroes:

Abraham Lincoln "Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it."

Teddy Roosevelt "I think there is only one quality worse than hardness of heart and that is softness of head. "

Fiorello LaGuardia "There is no Democratic or Republican way of cleaning the streets."

Robert LaFolette "Passive citizenship is not enough"

Thomas Jefferson "An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens. "

John Adams "Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives. "

Benjamin Franklin "How many observe Christ's birthday! How few, his precepts! O! 'tis easier to keep Holidays than Commandments.

Winston Churchill "All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. "

Sun Yat-sen "The whole world is one family"
