JJ Maj & The Unpolished Brass

"JJMAJ AIN'T NOTHING TO F**K WITH....."

About Me

Hailing from Augusta, Georgia, JJ Maj & The Unpolished Brass is comprised of eight talented musicians with an obsession focused tightly on creating music. Drawing their primary influences from Louisianas rich bayou culture, JJ Maj strives to preserve the artistic origins of roots music. An intense respect and love for all things Armstrong, Clinton, Waters, and Mr. Brown himself, JJ Maj swiftly sidesteps genre fads and fading musical trends and strives to purely invoke the spirit of Soul, Motown, and Funk into a tightly packaged piece of art. Brothers Matthew and Jarett Acosta provide guitar and bass, while cousin Joey Matherne and Timothy Acosta handle percussion. With John Rose on flute, and Jordan, Pedro and Joseph adding horn accents, they create a collage of grassroots music that is sure to excite all musical taste buds.

Band Members: We wanted to write a little something to let our listeners know that this profile is no longer the profile of an existing band. JJMAJ and the Unpolished Brass has decided to call it quits, for reasons not worth listing, and wanted to leave this profile open as a TRIBUTE to the memories and music. We want to thank you all dearly for your support and for sharing in the one thing we couldn't help but create. This was our passion and it will remain that for the rest of our lives. So thank you, and if you like the sound we created maybe you would like Bayou Bleu, the band that four previous members (Matthew Acosta, Jarett Acosta, Timothy Acosta, and cousin Joey Matherne) started up after the ending of this one. In my opinion it's got the same funky soul that we were known for with JJMAJ, just with less people. So please stop by we would love to be your friend, and you can find our profile on the top friends list below, peace. Previous members: Matthew "Funky Slow Slow" Acosta - guitar/vocals; Jarett "Bumpy Fizat" Acosta - bass; Joey "Mojo Jo Jo" Matherne - percussion; Tim Acosta - percussion and vocals; Michael Balducci - Drums; John "Heavy Fatts" Rose - flute/whistle/vocals; Jordan "Coota" Watwood - trumpet/vocals; Joseph Gelspie - trumpet/trombone; and Pedro Castano - trumpet.
Influences:Gumbo rockers is an article/review from our hometown Augusta, Georgia-JJ Maj and the Unpolished Brass have gloomed onto the idea that America is a melting pot- boil it and all of the funk rises to the top. In a continuous act of spontaneous ingenuity, the jazz-folk-funk-rock-whatever-you-like. "It is just bizarre happenstance where eight folks got together that like any kind of arranged noise"- whether it’s classical, folk, funk, jazz, salsa, reggae, roots music, blues. It’s all music, and it just so happens that seven guys got together and spoke the same language," says guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Acosta. Alongside Matt Acosta are Jarett Acosta on bass, Jordan Watwood on trumpet, Michael Balducci on drums, John Rose on penny whistle and vocals, Joey Matherne on percussion. "With all of the different instruments, we’re already outside of the box, but it’s just a matter of going on, shooting in any direction and being open to it. We don’t have a market, we’re not going for any particular style," Matt Acosta explains. " Our music taps into the best of whatever we like..when it comes out it literally is like a new American folk. A music of the people," Rose says. The folks definitely seem to relate to it. JJ Maj always ground things with good old fashioned pop sensibility- simple yet funky rhythms and hooks from a brass section not entirely in need of spit shine. -Andy Stokes, Metro Spirit of Augusta,Ga
