Immediate, boisterous and earthy, FuzzFace's mix of Rock, Indie, and Soul is unique and irresistible. They have the knack for mixing addictive melodies with raucous performance. With distant echoes of The Jam, The Stooges and the band’s hometown heroes Blur, FuzzFace’s music is a mouth-watering blend of quirky charm and incendiary showmanship.
FuzzFace’s dual songwriters and singers Ady Johnson (guitars) and Matt Simpkins (Hammond organ, guitar) have distinctive, soulful voices and they write the intoxicating melodies and knowing lyrics to match. Toby Bull (bass, saxophone) and Mark Turnbull (drums) are a heavy and hard kicking rhythm section. Above them, Matt’s Hammond organ and synth histrionics vie with Adey’s ruthlessly cool guitar chops.
Formed by a rabble of long time mates in 2001, FuzzFace cut their teeth playing in rough pubs and shitty clubs around Essex and Suffolk. Later that year, the band’s first demo was reviewed in Record Collector as “Marvellous, Quite Frankly”. A series of impressive London gigs followed, but the band’s momentum was abruptly halted in 2002 when Adey severed a nerve in his finger. The guitarist’s miraculous recovery throughout 2003 fired FuzzFace into recording the Josephine EP in 2004. Holly Hernandez enthused that FuzzFace sounded "like a very English version of the Strokes, which I suspect will guarantee their absolute adoration." A hectic schedule of gigging followed throughout 2004 and 2005. “Are We Nearly There Yet?” FuzzFace’s 2005 self-produced LP received extremely favourable local and internet reviews: the Colchester Evening Gazette described the band as “The true heirs to Blur”. But the group felt that although they had demonstrated the depth of their talent for songwriting and melody, the band’s legendarily raucous live sound was absent. News of FuzzFace’s performing talent was spreading fast and What’s On In London proclaimed that "FuzzFace have a fearsome live reputation...now watch them take London by storm". In May 2006, Oxford’s Shifty Disco released “The Relegation Song” as a download single. Despite limited marketing resources, within 10 days of release Shifty Disco’s Dave Newton described “The Relegation Song” as the label’s fifth best selling download of all time. Determined to at last fulfill their potential, FuzzFace spent the rest of 2006 writing the outstanding set of songs that became “Sound About You”. Recorded live in three 8 hour sessions between Christmas and New Year 2006, the LP was recorded in the loudest room the band could find: the massive redundant fire station at RAF Bentwaters. “Sound About You” finally captures FuzzFace in their full ecstatic, exuberant glory.
