asia mei, what a strange name. how do you pronounce it? ah-sya? oh, not ei-ja? interesting... so she’s not chinese? she’s actually russian born, israeli raised, boston relocated (to study and graduate from Berklee) and current new york city resident. asia is actually a russian-jewish name? nothing to do with the continent? and mei is just an abbreviation of a very long last name? good, we cleared that out.
so, much like her multifaceted name and background, asia does a lot of music. she is a singer/songwriter, a formerly classical and currently anything - pianist, a jazz, session and classical vocalist, a composer and arranger with credits on the upcoming John Wesley Harding with REM album, big bands and orchestras under her belt (and baton), an assistant engineer/producer for the big names and god knows what else she does in her free time.
with her debut cd “shards†called “mature beyond her years†and “beautifully done and original†by reviewers and industry dudes, asia plays out a lot with her band “asia & the waters†or as a duo with guitar virtuoso and singer/songwriter andres wilson around new york and the northeast. in “shards†you will find reference to all that asia’s ears traveled through: muse, debussy, jimi hendrix, heavy metal, middle-eastern, mellow piano and rock and roll. herself a combination of worlds, traditions and mentalities, her craft of combining styles is truly unique and truly, “asiaâ€.
recommended to piano rock lovers that enjoy muse, tori amos, fiona apple, ben folds, dresden dolls, coldplay, radiohead, queen or whatever else you can think of.
