Born Luis Rosa, DJ Habit was raised in a family where music was a part of everyday life and held value in his culture. His father, a drummer, passed his skills onto him at an early age which eventually guided him to his current passion of Hip Hop and Turntablism. DJ Habit was first exposed to Hip Hop during its golden age in the 80’s and began writing graffiti and break dancing with the local B-Boys. What started as a hobby making mix tapes in High School led him to the purchase of his first turntables and he began spinning House & Jungle in 98’.Habit met DJ DVS-ONE of Rhythm Quest Productions. It was with DVS that the young DJ would catch the scratch bug and he hasn’t looked back since. He did a series of local club events and various warehouse parties in Oakland. When Rhythm Quest disbanded Habit focused on recording and sharpening a trick mix style that became his signature, infectious party-starting sound. After doing some small appearances on local rappers albums (Livewire Entertainment, Brown Blooded Nation, Teddy G. & Bones) he met fellow turntablist Jays One and they began a San Francisco weekly at the Temple Bar known as Urban Meditation. The Two hit it off and following a four day musical marathon on a house boat founded Bear Knuckle Beats.Soon after DJ Habit released a small run mix CD titled, “Bay Habits.†The CD was a salute to the new Bay Music coming out and paying respect to one of his favorite rappers MAC DRE. The crew continues to evolve and has begun to launch an assault on the local DJ battles such as the famed B-Side Records battle, and the Guitar Center Battles.
