In the early 1970's, Dennis T. Ouellette discovered the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California where he and his wife, Caroline, were living and working as teachers. Enjoying a relaxing afternoon, he thought why not create a Faire in Sterling, New York near the shores of Lake Ontario. The family farm had a wonderful setting atop ice age old drumlins, surrounded by pastures and wood lots......He brought his dream to create a similar festival home to Sterling a few years later and began clearing land on 35 wooded acres of his family's land. Dennis' dream was to create a village with arts, crafts, entertainment, and foods. The Warwickshire Village would be of the 15th Century. Being a farmer, an educator, and a naturalist at heart, the clearing and development was by hand and with a small tractor. Construction was simple. Entertainment was with street characters that interacted with the patrons. Dennis envisioned using volunteers to run the festival and help educate people about the Elizabethan period. In its first few years the festival had four volunteers who performed stage shows.......In 1977 he introduced the Town of Sterling to what has become one of its most prosperous and well-known tenants......Shortly after the completion of the first season, Dennis T. Ouellette passed away. The magic and dreams were left behind to be developed and enjoyed through the years.......Today, The Renaissance Festival is one of the most authentic Festivals in the nation....... (I found this info. online from an old festival webpage)
