GREATNESS – It's one of those adjectives used only when speaking about someone of indescribable talent. It's like hearing a five year-old child playing Beethoven's 9th Symphony with unbridled mastery or witnessing a ten year-old prodigy exorcise a grandmaster chess champion. Likewise, no one word better describes the immense potential possessed by newcomer, SPOT.
A childhood nickname, SPOT has a youthful smile and affable demeanor which contradict his precocious nature and the 22 tumultuous years he's spent on the crime-riddled streets of Brooklyn's Coney Island. Standing over 6 feet tall, his boyish charm combined with an irrefutable gift of gab and infectious personality scream of a movie career. However, destiny has a mind of its own and, thus, SPOT was destined to be a Hip-Hop star.
Brought into the industry by Jimmy Henchmen, SPOT began writing for various multi-platinum acts, his first legit income. Now afforded the opportunity to travel the world, SPOT was a far cry from a lifestyle that previously had him driving cars that were registered in the name of strangers. Honing his production and writing skills under award-winning producers such as Mario Winans, D.Dot and El Debarge, SPOT quickly found his niche and the results have been simply remarkable. Combining descriptive lyrics and rewind-worthy wordplay with a uniquely melodic delivery, SPOT has gained a global following. In December 2005, SPOT teamed up with mixtape heavyweight Sickamore and released his first offering to the music world The Good Son, which was followed by the release of his second mixtape, A Dollar & A Dream in August 2007. Featuring both established and next-up artist such as Jim Jones, Papoose, and Serius Jones, the two became both street and hipster favorites', combining to move nearly 50,000 units, quickly gaining SPOT a reputation as “the next one†in a two-decade long line of outstanding rappers from New York
Since the release of the two projects, SPOT has scored and contributed music to television networks CW11, BET and MTV. In addition to receiving foreign press (France’s Rap US and Groove Magazines), SPOT made has appearances on various national radio shows. Gracing stages alongside the likes of Akon and David Banner, SPOT has also performed in two infamous NY prisons (Riker’s Island and Arthur Kills). To top it off, in May 2006 SPOT made prime time television history, becoming the first independent artist to appear on MTV (Sucka Free) to promote a mixtape, the previously mentioned A Dollar & A Dream.
Now with A Breath Away, his latest release on indie King Day Records, SPOT closes his trilogy of street releases. Combining powerful songs, genre-defying sonic landscapes, and a few guest stars (i.e. R. Kelly, Gucci Mane), A Breath Away is sure to impress even the staunchest critic. Destiny shows no favors but is more lenient to some…SPOT is one of those fortunate and talented few.
