About Me

This here is a tribute to one of the greatest short lived post-punk bands of all time. With only a few recordings made in their short existence, Twisted Roots music swam through my head throughout the 1980s and 90’s and was a constant inspiration to my own music. I was always on the lookout for Rodney on the Rocks compilation because way back in 83, I lent it out and never got it back and they were on it. “Snaked” is still one of my favorite post punk songs of all time. Switch to 2004 and there on the punk racks of Ameba Music is the definitive Twisted Roots compilation. Just as I was walking down the isle the dude was placing it on the rack. It was meant to be and I got to hear "Snaked" for the first time in a long time. At the time of their (re)appearance on the scene, I had just experienced the Germs and I looked for any way to hold onto that experience. Pat was the conduit and Twisted Roots was a change to the positive out of the punk scene which had always been a physically threatening (yet fun and intirgueing) experience for me. I only saw them two times, but I have vivid memories. The band was carved out of some of the most important LA punks in the city’s history. Pat Smear came from the Germs and Paul Roessler came from the Screamers and Nina Hagen. The rest of the band were pretty much made out of semi-experienced musicians who seemed to get their chops more from the streets of Hollywood and Santa Monica than from any schooled background. Kira Roessler, Paul’s sister, had played bass in a few bands as well as Emil, who played drums with a furious dis-attitude that any 15 year old surf punk would have. They both fit right in and gave the more experienced Pat and Paul a renewed musical verve in the wake of the devastation of loosing Germs front man and high school friend Darby Crash. Then there was Maggie Ehrig. I just wanted to know her. She was so fucking street cool. They all were. Her voice was the cherry on top of a handful of great pop-punk songs that were written in their six months of existence. She had the right thing at the right time with the right attitude and look. And thus was Twisted Roots. Short lived and executed and more than just a footnote in my book of music. Soon I wil post some flyers and other stuff. Untill then go out and get their music.Click Blaytnt for the schmo who put this page together and click TwistedRoots1981 for Twisted Roots Band page.http://www.dionysusrecords.com/bacchus/punk.html
