Music, art, poetry, cooking, and all that other metro frou frou. Also soccer, football, travel, snowboarding, rock climbing/backpacking/camping, and especially macroeconomics, which someday, I hope, will allow me to save the world... or more probably, die trying--nevertheless, I'll remain an optimist and idealist, albeit a stoic, cynical one... if that's even possible. It probably isn't. Oh well. If nothing else, I'll err on the side of idealism with a sense of irony. Right, so now that we've gotten that cleared up, my last-but-not-least interest would be general thuggery, thanks to the influence of the shamelessly ghettrified whitey, James Fox, aka J 2 tha Fizzox. Holla.
James A. Fox, if I didn't already know him.
Depends on the mood--it's a rare day when I don't listen to something by Elliott Smith or Radiohead. The short list would also include The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Clientele, Nada Surf, Bright Eyes, Dresden Dolls, Jon Brion, Patrick Wolf, Sigur Ros, Outkast, Killers, Kanye, Common, Devendra, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cat Power, Shins, Sufjan, Magnetic Fields, Death Cab, Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen. As for the more NPR-ish stuff, I sort of grew up on Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins, everyone from Kind of Blue, Tom Waits, Stephane Grapelli, Allison Krause, Tony Bennett, Jobim and Bebel, Ella, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Ravel, Chopin, and Liszt.
Watched some pretty fantastic movies recently--Me, You, and Everyone We Know tops the list. Syriana... loved it. Also, Munich, Saving Face, The Chorus, Constant Gardener. Some of my all timers include Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Crash, North by Northwest, Notorious, Casablanca, Rear Window (and anything else with Bogart or Jimmy Stewart), The Usual Suspects, Requiem for a Dream, Pi, Donnie Darko, Amores Perros, Fight Club, Snatch, Old School, Van Wilder, Best in Show, I Heart Huckabees, Big Fish, Ran, Lilya 4-Ever, and City of God.
Really not watching a whole lot these days, although I AM decently addicted to Arrested Development and The Office (and yes, the UK IS better). Ahh, and how could I have forgotten the Colbert Report... the most hysterical bit of political/satirical genius on the airwaves right now, along with the Daily Show...
Since lit is sort of my thing, this list could be impractically long, so I’ll go by authors instead: Camus, Tolstoy, Marquez, Kafka, Hesse, Borges, Lorca, Hunter S., Sedaris, Cummings, R.S. Thomas, Dickinson, Wm. C. Williams, Rilke (are we allowed to include poets?), Carlyle, and Spenser, as in The Faerie Queene, which is in no way intended to refer preemptively to Fox’s autobiography--hahaha, oooh, burned, that’s right, take that you crack weed…no, j.k. Fox, nothing but love.
