Step Softly, Ghost

About Me

Step Softly, Ghost was formed in the summer of 2002 by Matt Eberlin, Derek Kemp, Josh Kuntz, and Byron Wendling. We immediately started writing songs and playing around the midwest, and by September we were ready to record a batch of songs with in Chicago with Mike Lust which were released in January 2003 as the "Ruined in Repetition" ep on Anomer Records. Just before the release of the ep we recorded two more songs with Mike Lust. "I Belong Where I Can't Be Told I'm From" features Sarah Balliet of Murder by Death on cello andwas released on a split 7" with Philadelphia's Fall on Deaf Years in March 2003. "Cold City Cement" was exclusive to the CD sampler included with Issue 17 of Copper Press. Josh Kuntz left the band in March 2003 and SSG continued as a three piece until summer 2003 when Jesse West joined as full time bassist. Matt Eberlin left in August 2003 to relocate back to his hometown of Alton, IL where he currently plays in Camp Climax for Girls. Matt was replaced by Dustin Kemp on the drums. Austin Amstutz soon took over on bass and this line up stuck until May 2004 when Byron Wendling moved to New York and Austin Amstutz moved to California. Five songs were recorded for a split CD with Alton, IL group The Guns of Navarone but this release was cancelled. Derek and Dustin Kemp now play in Hour of the Wolf.Reviews:"....if you've missed your dose of post-rock, look no further, because this four-piece plays it better than just about any band I've heard, today or in the past, and they'll quickly make you forget about June of '44 or any of their forebearers. " - Delusions of Adequacy"Overall, each track shows merit in that it fills any purported lengthiness with random quick-changes and the skill it takes to rein and release their control of volume at the appropriate times. The amount of control employed by Step Softly, Ghost, coupled with their ability to not only emulate the great post-punk pioneers but do them justice in new and innovative ways, is extraordinary." - Lost at Sea
