here isnt a day gone by that I dont think about the job well done. It is the imperfections that we all face to take the sun and to embrace the beauty that comes alive in all of us.
The International Whaling Commission meeting in Anchorage has produced a resolution strengthening the 20 year old ban on commercial whaling. This was something Greenpeace and whale defenders around the world were looking for, and you helped make it happen.
Thank you!
Last year, the Japanese pro-whaling bloc managed a temporary majority in the IWC and passed the “St. Kitts Declaration,†which opened the door for a return to legal commercial whaling. This year’s “CITES Resolution†effectively overturns this bad declaration.
But while a full-on return to commercial whaling was dealt a serious blow this year, the commission also didn’t spend much time addressing the many man-made threats posed to the whales. 300,000 cetaceans are killed every year as a result of ship strikes, pollution, and bycatch, and overfishing and climate change are forecast to create potentially major problems for whales and all marine life.
The Baiji dolphin was declared functionally extinct this year, and Mexico’s Vaquita dolphin is likely to become extinct in the near future. Many whale populations, decimated by commercial whaling, are still not recovering after decades of protection. And The Japanese government plans to continue its commercial whaling program in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary under the guise of “scientific research†later this year.
We still have a lot to do. The IWC must begin to seriously address the many threats posed to cetaceans and take concrete action to stop commercial whaling in all its guises.
Thank you for your help in making progress happen at the IWC. If you haven’t done it already, please take a moment to subscribe to our blog so you can keep up with the action alerts that help make progress happen!
Peace!
