About Me

"It is a cliche of our own time that women spent half a century fighting for 'rights,' and the next half wondering whether they wanted them after all. 'Rights' have a dull sound to people who have grown up after they have been won." -Betty Friedan
I am drawn to beauty- in people, in music, in art, and in the passion that people have for their endeavors. I am silly and more often excited than not. I've learned that the thoughts in my head should sometimes just stay as thoughts in my head because honesty is only the best policy when it keeps me out of trouble. I will do most things, although a bit of coaxing is frequently necessary. I collect styles and eras (anything vintage) and wear them as art. I am sometimes painfully shy and at others blissfully beneath the spotlight. I'm mostly only dramatic on paper when I'm writing. Sometimes I expect too much of people and have an arbitrary way of showing people that I care about them, but I am extremely patient and loyal. I'm close to many, yet incredibly independent. I challenge myself often to avoid stagnation and often welcome change rather than avoid it. ..

My Interests

music, writing and art mostly. People. Rain and loud storms and snowflakes. Playing with clay. Sunlight and the outdoors. Feminism. Ice Cream and Sushi. Re-examining Social Barriers and Stereotypes. Learning and doing. Anything vintage or antique. Snowboarding.

I'd like to meet:

Those who try to avoid small talk and would rather discuss jello than life status quo. Those with confidence, boldness, audacity- mixed with an equally penetrable amount of reserve. Those that can identify jaded indifference, and instead choose to care. Those who embrace honesty, in its kindest form, as the best means of communication. Those who believe that life questions our abilities and challenges us to be kinder and more resilient day by day.

Music:

I grew up listening to:
1.) good 80's music- such as the kind that makes you want to tap a toe or bob your head
2.) self-deprecating womyn who sang and cried and belted their music with even the smallest extentions of their eyelids, like Tori Amos and Paula Cole, Poe, Fiona Apple, Bjork.
3.) Great Jazz vocalists, like Billie, Ella, Natalie Cole...
4.) Fabulous alternative- (and Indie rock) like The Cranberries, Modest Mouse...
5.) Great Acoustic, bluegrass, and those that made their guitars sing, such as Dave Matthews w/ Tim Reynolds, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Jimi Hendrix, Allison Krauss
6.)Classical like Beethoven and Bach, Broadway musicals and the operatic voices of many.
7.) Anything loud, with screaming guitar lines

Adding to those roots, my favorites currently include Mae, Schubert, Renee Fleming, Glassjaw, Shamelady, Metric, Sneaker Pimps, Coheed and Cambria, Frou Frou, Reggie and the Full Muthafuckin Effect...

Books:

Virginia Woolf, Catcher in the Rye, 1984, Sylvia Plath, Beat Poetry and Lit, Roald Dahl, Feminist Lit,Anne Sexton...

Heroes:

I guess most of the people that I surround myself with are in some way my heroes. But specifically- my sister, Virginia Woolf

What is it about me that makes me so "safe?" Is it the way I grew up, is it my innate sense of shyness, or my pursuit of intellectual goals? Sometimes I feel a little too safe. What does it mean to re...

Spreading the ashes

Do you believe in spirits???

Maybe I'm crazy. There are some who believe in spirits and some who say that strange events are merely a coincidental set of occurrences. I think I must be somewh...
