I've been in bands that have covered just about every genre, from jazz standards to goofy ska and Bela Fleck bluegrass to progressive metal. Hence, I have fairly varied tastes.Right now I've been listening to a lot of stuff outside of my typical progressive/ metal genre. The Peter Gabriel compilation Shaking the Tree has been in constant rotation. Also present is my newfound treasure, Jaco Pastorious' first solo album (self titled), along with selected tracks of live Weather Report. I've had a recent obession with a handful of solo bass composers, standouts being Jeff Schmidt, Jay Terrien, and Jean Baudin. Visions of solo bass performances dance in my head...
Just saw Children of Men and understand its rapid rise amongst the "Top Sci-Fi Movies of All Time" lists. Also been watching a handful of Spaghetti Westerns, Once Upon a Time in the West being a textbook example of phenominal filmmaking.
Adult Swim cartoons are pure, unbridled genious. I stare into their serene void and know that they stare back, and have found peace, comfort, and a discreet sense of doom in their manic musings. Kudos, you crack smoking artisans of all things animated!
Neil Gaiman's American Gods ("His name is GAY-man?!" )Also just read the first in the Stephen King Gunslinger series. Am thus far impressed.
