The road is wide and the best you can expect is the unexpected because on the highway of the lost and found, full moons come calling call to you, people carry ghosts in glass jars and satellites beat like a drum on your bones. There are little black wheels that slide out in the rain and lighthouses of song that lead you on. So, roll your fear into a pack and carry it across earth, sand, sea and air, past vampires red white and blue to a place warm and safe, where you just shine and hear echoes of the love you made.
Welcome to the world as seen through the eyes of Dane Tucquet, the Melbourne based musician and author of a collection of remarkably unique songs best described as bent noir folk.
Since hightailing it from his hometown of Byron Bay in pursuit of a larger musical landscape three years ago, Tucquet has trawled the bars and clubs of Melbournes music circuit relentlessly, enchanting listeners who hear echoes of their own journey in his dark songs about looking for the light.
Tucquets song writing style combines dream like lyrical narratives and minimal rhythmic motifs to weave tales of reality and fantasy, delivered by a remarkable deep voice almost schizophrenic in range and intensity. Built around heavily rhythmic guitar and kick-drum-like stomp box, these songs either careen down the highway in their own bent fashion or hover in the air before caressing you with a gentle groove.
Vibraphone, banjo, piano, mellophone, double bass, slide guitar and singing crystal emerge then fade away again in the dark terrain of Tucquets debut album Bury Me In My Headphones, while that voice - reminiscent of Tom Waits & M.Ward - guides the listener from shadow to light.
In the lead up to the release of Bury Me In My Headphones, Tucquet is consistently playing on the Melbourne music circuit and has performed a host of metropolitan and regional supports for artists such as LOW, Martha Wainwright, Clare Bowditch & the Feeding Set, Sodastream, The Darling Downs, Tobias Cummings and alongside Jen Cloher & Josh Pyke. Most recently Tucquet has shared the bill with some of Australias and the worlds premier artists at The Great Escape Festival Sydney, and the Laneway Festival Melbourne.
