Old acquaintances from Slashdot and DeviantArt, and from Alt.Callahans newsgroup on Usenet. I know you're out there somewhere...
I detest 99% of mainstream pop music, and avoid daytime music radio. My tastes cover the whole gamut of electronica (ambient, techno, breakbeat, etc.) plus the non-bling, non-gangsta hip-hop (yes, it does exist), and a bit of classical music, turntablism and bhangra thrown in on the side. :) I have a particular soft-spot for stuff from the 70's, 80's and early 90's (the era I grew up in), and am always on the lookout for compilations and suchlike from that time.In the last few years, I've moved towards buying my music as MP3s from places such as EMusic.com and Bleep.com , and on CD direct from independent labels - I feel that that way less of my money is lining the pockets of middlemen, and more ends up with the artists that I want to support. I've tried P2P, but the pickings there are pretty slim with such non-mainstream tastes as mine. :(I listen to several late-night specialist music shows on radio here in the UK - The Breezeblock with Mary Ann Hobbs , The Blue Room , OneWorld , Worldwide with Gilles Peterson , OneMusic - and also to Internet radio stations such as Live365 and SomaFM . I was an avid listener to the radio shows of John Peel for many years - he is sorely missed. :(
Having a day job means I usually avoid the horror that is daytime television. *shudder* I usually watch Channel 4 News when I get home in the evening. Other than that, I don't tend to watch much TV - the odd wildlife programme or documentary, a bit of comedy, but none of the soaps or big-name drama shows. I do have a weakness for a few 'lifestyle' programmes such as Antiques Roadshow and How Clean Is Your House? though, and was overjoyed when Doctor Who returned to our screens this year, having grown up with it in the 70s.
