I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. My father, USAF Major Christopher Summers, took the family for a flight in our airplane. It came under attack by an alien Shi'ar spaceship. As the plane went down in flames, my parents fastened me andmy younger brother Alex into a parachute and pushed us off the plane, in hopes that they would survive. Unfortunately, my parachute caught fire, and I struck my head upon landing. This caused me brain damage. As a result, i could no longer control my optic blasts. I also suffered prolonged amnesia during my childhood. I spent most of my childhood in an orphanage in Nebraska, and was subjected to batteries of tests and experiments by the orphanage's owner, Mr. Milbury (an alias for the geneticist Mister Sinister). When I was sixteen, I was found by Charles Xavier, and became one of his students and the first official X-Man. I soon graduated to become the team's field leader, a position I would traditionally hold over the years. I took the name Cyclops.
I had long believed that my parents had died in the plane accident. In fact, they had been captured and sold into slavery by the Shi'ar. As an adult member of the X-Men, I met my father, now known as Corsair, leader of the Starjammers, a group of aliens opposing what they saw as the tyranny of the Shi'ar empire. Several more years passed before the two learned of each other's true identities.
I had an on-again/off-again relationship with Marvel Girl during my time in the X-Men, culminating in her tragic death as she tried to pilot a space shuttle through a solar flare, her rebirth as Phoenix, and her suicide on the Moon. Beleiveing that Jean Grey (Phoenix) was dead, I met a woman who was almost her exact duplicate named Madelyne Pryor. Unbeknownst to either of them at the time, Madelyn Pryor was a clone of Jean Grey, created by Mister Sinister. Sinister was given vast powers by the virtually immortal mutant Apocalypse, but he feared Apocalypse's power and began to investigate a means to defeat him. He discovered that the combination of Summers and Grey DNA would produce a mutant of sufficient power to do this. With Jean Grey appearently dead, and Sinister for some reason unable to combine their DNA artificially, he created Madelyn Pryor and positioned her to make contact with Cyclops. His plan worked: the two married and had a child, whom they named Nathan Christopher Summer.
Some time later, Jean Grey was revealed to be alive, and her reappearence led to a series of events that caused Madelyn Pryor to become insane and eventually kill herself (as told in the Inferno crossover). The baby was left in the care of Cyclops and Jean, who were now part of the group X-Factor.
I eventually left the X-Men for a while after this, drifting for several months until reunited with the team against Magneto. Not long after, I met Madelyne Pryor, an uncanny double of Marvel Girl, and we married. We had had a son, Nathan Christopher Charles Summers, who was later sent into a future timeline to become the cyborg Cable.
