She began modeling at the age of fifteen for local ads. She indicated that she was bullied for her figure when she was young. Thompson beat out thirteen other contestants to win Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. The judges knew very well that she had great model potential due to her high confidence level. She is the second America's Next Top Model winner from Florida; the other is Yoanna House. Though she is naturally a brunette, she received a blonde hair weave for her makeover. Per her win on Top Model, Thompson is currently a Cover Girl for Cover Girl cosmetics and is represented by Elite Model Management. She will also have a cover and six page spread in the July issue of Seventeen and a billboard in Times Square (being the second ANTM alum to ever achieve this, after Eugena Washington.
"People always say you have to be stick-skinny, emaciated and unhealthy and I've kind of stood up for [being full-figured] my whole life," Thompson told the New York Post in her first post-victory interview. "I'm not going to lose 50 pounds — if someone asks me to do that, I'll go to another [modeling] agency," she said. "I've already heard online from boys and girls all over the world who are dealing with eating disorders. They're thanking me for standing up and saying, 'I am a plus-size model and I am beautiful.'" "The judges saw that I'm here for a reason - and now I have to make that happen."
