The Put-Downs' first scheduled show was Friday the Thirteenth of February, 1998. The actual first show was on the Saturday before, when Teen Cool asked them to open a show at The Oven in Houston at the last minute. A visit by an H.P.D. helicopter looking for fans who trashed the club was the first sign of the mayhem that continues today. Paul J formed The Put-Downs after leaving Austin and The Motards in late '97 to return to Beaumont, Texas. Tom McMurder had booked a Motards show in Beaumont a few years before, and quit his then-current band, Kung Fu Grip, to play drums with Paul. His former band-mate Connor initially played bass, although it was known to be short-term since she was leaving for SMU the next fall, when her boyfriend Casey Callais, AKA Chester Drawers took over the chores. The Put-Downs had several vinyl releases, including three 7" EPs and one 12" EP, and a West Coast tour under their belts when they were side-tracked by Y2K. In early February 2000, Tom left the band to move to Wyoming and marry his on-line sweetheart. (True story: They are still married today, living in Houston where Tom books shows and does a video show for Houston Cable Access.) Four months later Casey left town after a near brush with paternity. The Dempsey brothers joined the band: Michael on drums, younger brother Scott on bass, and things were never the same. Since then, The Put-Downs have made another West Coast tour, released two full-length CDs and one 7" EP, and brought many a cool band from around the country into Beaumont for shows. The trio works constantly writing and recording new material, and is currently planning several upcoming releases, so keep your eyes peeled.
