Paper Box

About Me

Paper Box is a piano-driven indie rock band from the Phoenix area. We're a pretty diverse crowd over here. Somehow we've managed to come up with a cohesive sound despite the musical cacophony one might expect if you knew all of our musical backgrounds. The songs here on our Myspace are rough cuts from our studio. They are one of a kinds! All these songs were rerecorded due to circumstances that were beyond our control *cough* hard drive failure. *grumble* *grumble* Not to worry. They came out better than before and will be on the new album. So these are not only rare collectors items now, but they are also free. Woot! So download them. Or better yet, download them from our website , the bit rate is better.

Much love to all the Hardcores

Influences: I've been influenced by a lot of musicians over the years. The Band, Bob Dylan, Janice Joplin and Arlo Guthrie being some of the early ones. Then there was the metal militia of Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Dream Theater. These secondary influences are masked well by the lack of distortion and guitars in the music. Later came a mellower/crazier phase where albums like Bitches Brew and Sketches of Spain come in. Thelonious Monk, Jim White, Mississippi John, Dave Matthews and Fiona Apple. A flare for the avant-garde tempered by years of folk music and the blunt and to-the-point of hard rock. Not many Classical composers have influenced me directly except Bach. The mathematical beauty, the variations, the FUN he had mixing intellectual tom foolery with the raw emotion, the experience of music. It is hard to come away unchanged by these people. At one point I have envied them all for their talent and voice. But I think we have made something new hear. Not something vastly groundbreaking, not like Miles, or Monk or Dream Theater or Jim White, but something that is familiar without being the same. Something that is both comfortable and fresh. Like a new shirt. All the familiar holes are there, one for the head, two for the arms, but it's got a nice little design down the sleeve, a few buttons down the front and oddly enough, no collar. Same idea, only more so. : )
Sounds Like: Nick Cave, Counting Crows, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen... drop us an e-mail if you having any good comparisons.
