McCain Economic Plan.......................... A Pro-Growth, Pro-Jobs Strategy To Get Our Economy Back On Track. John McCain's strategy includes taking the near-term actions needed to provide immediate help to American families while also taking the longer-term steps necessary to secure America's economic prosperity and leadership in the world.http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/ John McCain 2008 - John McCain for President ____________________________________________________________ Straight Talk on Health System Reform..................... John McCain is willing to address the fundamental problem: the rapidly rising cost of U.S. health care. Bringing costs under control is the only way to stop the erosion of affordable health insurance, save Medicare and Medicaid, protect private health benefits for retirees, and allow our companies to effectively compete around the world. ____________________________________________________________ Lobbying & Ethics Reform............................... John McCain believes that a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" must remain ever faithful to that noble charge. America needs leadership devoted to the public interest, not the special interest, and a government that fulfills its duties with unfailing integrity, accountability, and common sense. Those who serve in positions of public trust have a patriotic duty to serve the national interest with integrity and accountability, to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the people we are privileged to serve, and to devote ourselves to America's agenda, not that of narrow special interests __________________________________________________________ Border Security & Immigration Reform...................... I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will _________________________________________________________ Strategy for Victory in Iraq.............................. John McCain believes that we must not fail in Iraq. Succeeding in the cause of helping the Iraqi people build a stable, secure, representative state is essential to achieving an enduring peace in a region of the world central to American prosperity and national security. Failure in Iraq will endanger America for generations to come. America has a vital interest in a secure, democratic Iraq, at peace with its neighbors, to help stabilize a dangerous and critical region. ___________________________________________________________H uman Dignity & the Sanctity of Life..................... During more than five years as a POW in Vietnam, John McCain experienced the worst assaults on human dignity imaginable. Yet each day he also saw in his fellow prisoners the power of human compassion and the will to prevail against unimaginable evil. It is this experience, and a life dedicated to public service, that has imbued in John McCain a fundamental commitment to the protection of human dignity that will shape his presidency. __________________________________________________________ Strict Constructionist Philosophy......................... John McCain believes that one of the greatest threats to our liberty and the Constitutional framework that safeguards our freedoms are willful judges who usurp the role of the people and their representatives and legislate from the bench. As President, John McCain will nominate judges who understand that their role is to faithfully apply the law as written, not impose their opinions through judicial fiat. ___________________________________________________________ Commitment To America's Service Members: Past And Present.. America owes its liberty, its prosperity, and its future to our veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting our great country. John McCain has fought to honor our national commitment to our veterans who have given their careers and livelihoods to ensuring our freedom. He believes we must provide for service members and their families while they serve, we must help those who return from combat to adjust to civilian life, and we must honor and never forget the service of those who do not return. _________________________________________________________ Education... Excellence, Choice, and Competition in American Education _________________________________________________________ National Security........................ The most sacred responsibility vested in a president - the commander in chief - is to "preserve and protect" American citizens. John McCain has the necessary vision and unrivaled experience to command the United States armed forces and adapt our nation's defenses to the demands of a changing and dangerous world. ___________________________________________________________ Stewards of Our Nation's Rich Natural Heritage............ John McCain has a proud record of common sense stewardship. Along with his commitment to clean air and water, and to conserving open space, he has been a leader on the issue of global warming with the courage to call the nation to action on an issue we can no longer afford to ignore. _________________________________________________________ Protecting Second Amendment Rights..................... John McCain believes that the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms is a fundamental, individual Constitutional right that we have a sacred duty to protect. We have a responsibility to ensure that criminals who violate the law are prosecuted to the fullest, rather than restricting the rights of law abiding citizens. Gun control is a proven failure in fighting crime. Law abiding citizens should not be asked to give up their rights because of criminals - criminals who ignore gun control laws anyway. ________________________________________________________ America's Space Program................... "Let us now embark upon this great journey into the stars to find whatever may await us."
U.S. Senator John McCain today made the following statement regarding the National Day of Prayer.Today,in communities across this nation,Americans of all faiths will join together in prayer as part of the National Day of Prayer. In big cities and small towns, millions of Americans pray each day to give thanks for life's blessings and to have the strength to face the challenges ahead. At this time when our military men and women are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and across the world, we also pray for their continued safety. On this day, we recognize the power that prayer has had in our lives and the life of our country.**************U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement on Cinco de Mayo as his campaign announced several new Spanish efforts,"Cinco de Mayo commemorates an important moment in the history of Mexico's path to freedom. On this day in 1862,a small group of Mexican troops overcame overwhelming force to win the Battle of Puebla.Today,we join together to remember the sacrifice that these Mexican patriots endured,as well as the struggles of all those around the world striving for freedom. We recognize as well the important friendship that exists between our country and Mexico, and celebrate the many contributions Mexican-Americans have made to our society, culture, security and economy. The Cinco de Mayo statement can now also be found on the Spanish section of the official campaign website at http://espanol.johnmccain.com,which the campaign launched today. This part of the website will feature regular updates in Spanish throughout the election. RON FOURNIER You made the reference to Senator Obama's comments recently about working-class voters. Do you think the Senator is an elitist? JOHN MCCAIN Oh, I don't know. I think those comments are elitist. I think that anybody who disparages people who are hard-working, honest, dedicated people who have cherished the Second Amendment and the right to hunt and the right to observe that and their values and their culture that they value and that they've grown up with and sometimes in the case of generations, and saying that's because they're unhappy with their economic conditions? I think it's a fundamental contradiction of what I believe America is all about that I tried to describe in my remarks. These are the people that produce a generation that made the world safe for democracy. These are the people that today, their sons and daughters are in harm's way defending this nation. These are the people that have fundamental cultural, spiritual and other values that, in my view, have very little to do with their economic condition but has everything to do with what Tocqueville said America was all about 200 years ago and is the same today. FOURNIER If those remarks were elitist, which you say they are, does that make him an elitist? MCCAIN I don't know, because I don't know him very well.I don't know Senator Obama very well.I can only look at his remarks, and I've seen them now several times, and say that those are certainly not the vision that I have of America and its strength and its greatness and what its fundamental values and beliefs are.FOURNIER You served with him for a couple years.Did you ever see elitist behavior from him? MCCAIN I know that positions on many of the issues that he has taken ,I don't know if you would call it elitist but certainly are fundamentally different than mine.I am for less government, less regulation, lower taxes, et cetera, et cetera. Ranging from national security to domestic issues, we are very different. That's why the American people will have the opportunity with either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama to see some stark contrasts in our vision for the future of America, and I look forward to that debate.I look forward to having that discussion all across America.
