WE MUST STOP THE VIOLENCE

Guitars not Guns- Santa Fe, New Mexico

THIS IS THE CARLOS ROMERO CHAPTER!

From left, Dan Nava, Debbie Romero, David Nava and Denise Nava helped organize the local chapter of Guitars not Guns as a tribute to Romero’s son, Carlos Santiago Romero, who was killed in 1997 in a gang-related shooting.

Guitars not Guns is a federally exempt non-profit organization headquartered in San Jose, California, founded by Ray and Louise Nelson.

The mission of Guitars not Guns is to provide guitars and lessons to foster children, at risk youth and other deserving children. We serve children between the ages of 8 and 18. No child will be turned away. We are not anti-gun, we are anti-gun violence and we can offer an alternative to violence.

Our goal is to stop violent behaviors in schools and in the community. We will try to divert as many children as possible from the self-destructive behaviors of drugs, alcohol, crime and gang activity. By exposing children and teens to music, we hope to engage their creative potential and offer them an alternative to the increasing narrow of choices presented to them. Music can calm a troubled young life and it can give a child something to embrace during an often difficult time in their lives.

We are hoping to get our first class started during the 2008-2009 school year.

This organization relies solely on donations and volunteers. If you wish to donate monetarily or your time, you can contact
Denise Nava at [email protected]

CARLOS ROMERO by Debbie Romero (His mom)

Carlos was born on Dec. 27, 1977. He was a pretty mellow kid. He was very soft spoken.

Carlos was very smart. I remember when he was little, don't really remember how old he was, but he could spell any word you gave him. I would get words, big words, from the dictionary and he would be able to spell them. He liked to draw. I still have some pictures that he drew of a guy in a zoot suit. There was a time when he wanted to join the air force so he could fly those planes, like in the movie Top Gun. He had a framed picture of a plane in his room. Then he went to middle school, and everything changed. He was getting into trouble and didn't really care about school anymore.

He ended up going to Boys Town in Nebraska. He did real good there. He had a 4.0 gpa. That's where he met his girlfriend.

They had a little boy named Andrew. He was born in 1996.

He's a God sent from Heaven. He is just like his dad. He lookslike him, acts like him. He's Carlos all over again. Carlos would be so proud of Andrew.

They say things happen for a reason. And for the longest time, I just didn't understand why Carlos had to die so young. I use to think that it just wasn't fair that he had to die. I still don't think it's fair. They also say we are all here for a reason. I thought that I had no purpose being here. I don't know, maybe Carlos died so we could help other kids. But now I believe, that with this program "Guitars not Guns" that we are here to help kids so that they don't fall into the wrong crowds. If we can help even just one kid, it would all be worth it! I think Carlos would be very proud of what we're doing.

I'd like to meet:

We would love to meet guitars players who would be interested in volunteering their time to these kids. It would only be for one hour a week from 3:30 to 4:30.We would also like to meet lots of friends who agree that this violence in our youth to end.
