Bruno Adams was born in Bacchus Marsh, Australia, in 1963 and moved to Melbourne in 1978. There, he became part of the embryonic Punk/New Wave scene, playing with musicians from The Saints, Crime And The City Solution, and Laughing Clowns. In 1984 he formed his own band, Once Upon A Time. They played Melbourne’s clubs from 1985 to 1988, building a reputation for apocalyptic live shows with their avant-garde psychedelic blues sound. They moved to Berlin in 1989 and supported Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds throughout Europe on The Good Son tour of 1990. A European tour supporting Swans followed in the early 1990’s. Once Upon A Time released three C.D.s: Once Upon A Time (1990); In The Blink Of An Eye (1992); and Don’t Look Down (1994). The band finished in 1996.
Phil Shoenfelt was born in Bradford, England, in 1952. After colliding with the London Punk scene in the mid-1970’s, he moved to New York where he formed the post-punk noise band Khmer Rouge. In the early 1980’s they supported acts such as Suicide, Tom Verlaine, and The Clash and are featured on the White Columns Noise Festival Tape which also includes early versions of Sonic Youth and Swans. In New York they were managed by Nat Finkelstein, author of The Factory Years and renowned photographer of The Velvet Underground. Khmer Rouge returned to London in 1984 and after supporting The Fall on two British tours split in 1986. In 1989 Shoenfelt began a solo career, and in 1995 moved to Prague in The Czech Republic where he is still living. He has released several C.D.s, solo and also with his Czech backing band Southern Cross. The three CDs with Southern Cross are: Blue Highway (1997); Dead Flowers For Alice (1999); and Ecstatic (2002). He has also had two books published in Czech translation by Mata books of Prague: Junkie Love/Fet’áska Láská (1997) and The Green Hotel/Zelen_ Hotel (1998). Junkie Love was published in English by Twisted Spoon publishing house in autumn 2001.
Chris Hughes was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1968. He was a founding member of Once Upon A Time and also of Hugo Race And The True Spirit. Since arriving in Europe in 1989 he has played and recorded with: Nina Hagen, Mick Harvey, Nikki Sudden, Rolf Goldkind, Roland S. Howard, and many others. His unique style of explosive yet well-anchored syncopations leaves its unmistakable mark on every project he is a part of. Hughes is currently working on his solo project Hughes Leisure Group, some tracks of which appear on the C.D. Wet Dream by Hugo Race And The True Spirit. He was also a member of the Berlin-based Industrial-Ambient collective Snowcrash, and plays with the psychedelic garage band The Methylated Spirits.
