Camp History The ACA Youth Camp began in 2000 as the Youth Initiative. The Youth Initiative was originally a satellite program offered at the Annual ACA Educational Conference & Exposition. Realizing the need to have specific programming for its youth members, the ACA developed the Youth Initiative to help provide a support group for youth with limb loss or limb difference. The Youth Initiative was held in conjunction with the conference from 2000 until 2002, when it became known as the ACA Youth Camp, run by the Youth Activities Program (YAP).When concerns of security and privacy for the youth were addressed, the camp was moved to an offsite venue in 2003. In 2004 the camp dates were separated from the conference due to the difficulty of hosting two national events at the same time. The camp has been held at Camp Dream in Warm Springs, GA since 2005. Since its humble beginnings, the ACA Youth Camp has continued to grow anddevelop into a six day program, which includes two travel days for campers and a staff training day.Purpose The purpose of the ACA Youth Camp is to provide a camping experience for youth with limb loss and limb difference that focuses on leadership development, nutrition education, and physical fitness, improving self-esteem, creating positive social interaction, and developing peer support.ACA Youth Camp Future A study of limb loss in the United States found that there were 70,000 individuals under the age of 18 living with limb loss in 19961. The ACA recognizes the need to constantly reach more youth. Some of the projected changes for 2007 include a Junior Counselor program for counselors in training, adding new and exciting activities, and improving some of the favorite activities from the past. The next few years will be an exciting time for the ACA Youth Camp, and the YAP staff are always looking for new campers, counselors, and financial partners to help make the camp an experience that will continue to impact the lives of youth with limb loss and limb difference.
