Known affectionately as Jonna, Joan, Johnny, HopSing, Jennifer (by all my asian customers) or Ja-na-nae (no I'm not putting your nickname for me in here Shay!) I am and have always been full of purpose and determination. On February 8, 2005, I found what I was supposed to put that determination and purpose into: my lifelong goal, getting Justice for Jason.
Jason is my brother, he was 18 years old and just out of high school (tired of his job at Wendy's) when he signed up for the Marine Corp. We all tried to talk him out of it, but he wanted to go to art school (his lifelong passion was drawing) and didn't want that financial burden on our parents, so he thought the military was the best way to do it. He had some help with this idea from a scumbucket recruiter named Richardson who told him that when he got out of the Marines he would be making more money than him (the recruiter). Richardson also told my brother that he would never go to Iraq. You see what lies were fed...
My brother liked to fish but he was never a fish in the water. He could doggy paddle and that was about it. He expressed this concern to his recruiter, knowing that a swim qual was part of boot camp. The recruiter told him not to worry, that there were lots of guys in Jason's situation and they always made it thru Parris Island. So my brother was bussed down to South Carolina a week after I returned home from my semester abroad in Ireland. (Yes I got one week to spend with him, and I thank God that he wasn't sent to SC while I was in Ireland.) Jason sent home letters and called saying he wasn't cut out for the Marines. A quiet boy always, he was picked out of his platoon and ridiculed and made to do extra work. He also spent weeks trying to pass the swim qual but could not. On his final day on Earth, he was trying to pass the swim qual with a piece of shit called Nadya Lopez. He screamed that he was going under and that he couldn't swim. She wouldn't let him out of the pool. He died a few minutes later. The autopsy report read aphysixation. Jason was also on cold medicines, malnourished and had a hip injury. He had no right being made to go in that goddamn pool, and that's why my brother isn't here today. He'll never get married, he'll never have kids, we'll never tell our kids about being "bobsey twins", and he'll never get to fulfill his dream of being an artist.
For that, I pledge to seek justice for my brother's death in whatever way presents itself. I know that he's in heaven, but Lopez and the others responsible for his death are going to hell.
