As the longest running Hip Hop broadcast in the 25+ year history of WSIA, “The Dego Show†is the urban essence of 88.9FM.
Emilio “Sparks†Medugno joined a mediocre college radio station with the incentive to pursue commercial radio. He began to dedicate so much time to the broadcast outlet that it became a life priority. Emilio began to envision the future. He would construct and maintain the direction of the show for years to come. While going to college full-time and working a part-time job position, his efforts would not go unnoticed as he would be named the station’s urban program director.
For close to a decade, Emilio has maintained the credibility of what is known as “The Dego Show.†The broadcast has reached over 2.5 million listeners in its existence. The broadcast eventually gained international exposure as it is highly popular via the World Wide Web. The show's popularity surpasses 98% of college radio broadcasts worldwide.
“The Dego Show†is known for holding classic emcee battles featuring local & mainstream artists alike. The broadcast has been host to guests such as Black Moon, Guru, Grafh, Killarmy, Little Brother, Maino, MIMS, Necro, Redman, Wu-Tang Clan and many more. The show is also known for enabling underground talent such as Apacolipps, Crisis Center, Fokuss, JoJo Pellegrino, Red Rum, Swan Lake, and many more to reach the masses.
DJ Almighty is credited for having paved the way as Emilio Sparks would obtain a general knowledge of broadcast etiquette from him. He also inspired the show’s title along side DJ Red Devil. DJ Red Devil opened the doors to the Underground Hip Hop format that the show took on immediately following its first broadcast in October of 2001. DJ Red Devil would eventually leave the broadcast to pursue a recording contract with a major record label.
The show’s early production was monitored by Jessie or J. McNasty as she was known on-air. A significant role as she maintained the overall conduct and vision of the broadcast for quite some time. Upon the departure of DJs Almighty and Red Devil as well as the forthcoming departure of J. McNasty, Emilio began to search for new talent to recruit.
“DJ Drastic is the truth.†A reckless individual with an immense amount of talent to be shared with the world, Emilio found his superstar DJ. DJ Drastic had been creating massive buzz on the streets of New York for quite some time and was interested in embracing new outlets. During a live appearance, a mutual friend exchanged Emilio and DJ Drastic’s contact information. Emilio reached out and challenged his urban stomping grounds. Drastic would respond efficiently, significantly challenging Emilio’s roots. DJ Drastic would arrive in September of 2003. His unorthodox style and street material often caused conflict and issues amongst station heads. He appeared arrogant and rugged although Emilio quickly realized that DJ Drastic’s business savvy and professionalism surpassed any individual he has dealt with to date. DJ Drastic’s talents and visions would generate much momentum for the broadcast and station. He eventually created his own mix show entitled “The Grind Session.†This outlet enabled “The Dego Show†to reach a wider array of audience.
DJ Ant-Live & X-Cell were frequent guests and would fill in for DJ Drastic. Emilio began to search for an individual to provide a medium in the show's commentary segments. He would stumble upon a wild style, politically charged individual named Vinny A.K.A. Future Boy 3001. Future Boy 3001 would be invited to join the broadcast in 2004 as the moderate voice in the show’s commentary. Future Boy 3001 would eventually leave the broadcast enabling an opportunity for a fresh face. Harold A.K.A. H. Boogie joined the show in late 2007 as the young face and voice of the broadcast.
Since the show commenced, Emilio “Sparks†Medugno & DJ Drastic have successfully maintained a broadcast that is appealing to both commercial fans and Underground Hip Hop purists. Tune into “The Dego Show†on 88.9FM WSIA or listen live online. Check your local listings.
