Shut up and eat! You know my love is sweet!

About Me

I'm an independent designer (RiKARiKA Vintage Fabric * One-Of-A-Kind Designs)- I make clothing, accessories and artwork, and my forte is in utilising vintage kimono fabrics in some shape or form (to check out the myspace page, see the very last icon below in my friends list). I grew up around a kimonophile/Japanese tea ceremony artist mother and it makes me feel comforted when I'm surrounded by these fabrics (not to mention, they are outstandingly beautiful!). I inherited my sewing skills from my Japanese grandmother who was an amazing seamstress, and my cooking skills from my Polish grandmother who was a kickass homemaker & cook. I've been cooking and sewing since I can remember. I was born & raised in Tokyo - my Mama is Japanese & my Pops is Polish American from N'Joisey. It irritates me that I have to check off "Other" when I have to pick something that requires me to indicate my ethnicity - I truly consider myself to be both. I am also completely bilingual, which makes me think in concepts rather than in one language or the other -it can get confusing! My background/schooling is in art/sculpture, and in the past I hoped to be an art professor. I changed careers for the better, and couldn't be happier! (It's always good to be independent!) I love living in Seattle where I am surrounded by the most wonderful, kind, inspiring and interesting friends, even though I really miss my other friends scattered around the world! I share my birthday with Francoise Hardy, Andy Kaufman, Benjamin Franklin, Muhammad Ali, Al Capone, Eartha Kitt, James Earl Jones, Jim Carrey, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vidal Sassoon, Anton Chekhov, etc. You can decide for yourself what all of that means. :) Oh yes, and one more thing - if Pollyanna were real, I would be she. It's true, just ask any of my friends. I like to be happy and make others happy. I like to be realistic yet positive. I am always determined to be better today than I was yesterday. Life can be hard at times, but I love it!

My Interests

*Look out I'm wordy - so wordy in fact this will probably test your patience* Working on various projects like sewing, decorating my house, or doing something art-related; I LOVE anything fashion-related; I like to try to make my hair look fun; I love the act of simply touching fabric and being surrounded by it; I like to look at or eat things with tentacles; I swear a lot, but I promise I won't in this profile; I like to babble if I am permitted or if I feel very comfortable in an environment - which either amuses or annoys people; I like to talk to myself when I am alone - it helps me get things done, and it gives me the opportunity to be my own cheerleader (woo!); I love baubles, sequins, beads, glitter, or anything else that falls under that category; Singing strange songs to my dog - she actually likes to be sung to; I love to take notes in general; I LOOOOOOVE anything with polkadots; I like to write letters and notes to people; I cannot imagine my life without the ampersand symbol (&); lipsynching to music with my headphones while I take long walks; Daydreaming about things that make me happy if I have the time; peering into people's pretty gardens, wishing I had a green thumb like theirs (I do try to garden, but I'm absolutely horrible); watching movies with friends or at home with my boy and dog; going to live music shows; being slightly random (which usually either makes people chuckle, or they think I'm a nutcase); I have a tendency to bust out laughing at inappropriate times and places; organinsing and sorting everything and cleaning in general - no, I don't have OCD, I just like to live in a clean living space...okay, maybe a touch. I will admit though that I've had an extended love affair with my electronic labelmaker!; slapstick, really stupid-stupid-stupid comedy; things in odd numbers, yes please!; I have a soft spot for conceptual and contemporary art; fave seacreatures-seahorses, mermaids, jellyfish, and octopuses; fave animals-tigers, fawns, hippopotami, unicorns, meerkats, foxes, tiny bats, frilled lizards, peacocks, robins, swallows and cardinals; fave flowers-poppies, roses, camellias, lavender; don't have a fave colour anymore because I like all colours, even puke-green... but if I can choose a few, they would be red (all shades from bright to burgundy. It's also the colour that I wear the most - my Japanese grandmother's influence - I just can't get enough of red!), orange, lemon yellow, green-gold, olive, light teal, pink (pale, medium, hot), chocolate brown, steely/gunmetal grey, cream white; speaking of colours, I gravitate towards red shoes and even though most of the time I won't buy it (because I'm a tightwad), I will covet them, always. they're also more versatile than you think!; window shopping and the very, very, very occasional splurge shopping; doing yoga in the privacy of my own home. I go bonkers when I go a few days without it; KEXP is essential to my life & sanity; cooking and baking yummies - lately I've been honing my pie-baking skills, both sweet and savoury; eating faves: sushi & all Japanese food (I eat all types of cuisines - I definitely am not a picky eater, although I get tummy trouble sometimes because I have chronic IBS, so lately I've been trying to eat more "fisheterian" with little or no meat. Okay. So you didn't really need to know that.), Indian food, Thai food, olives (any and all kinds - I would perish without olives...), grilled cheese sandwiches, Polish food like kielbasa on a roll with mustard & kraut, pierogies, gulumpki (cabbage rolls), and kolacky cookies, I also like kosher dill pickles, veggie minestrone, chicken noodle soup, clam chowdah, bread from all over the world, nutella on saltines, chocolate covered pretzels, pain au chocolat, fruit - especially rainier cherries, pineapple, strawberries, mangoes, bananas, and fuji apples, ice cream (preferably vanilla - and no folks, vanilla is NOT boring!) & gelato (preferably vanilla, stracchiatelli, creme caramel), strawberry popsicles and fudgsicles, garden & boca burgers, filet mignon cooked medium-rare, london broil, homemade french fries, homemade margherita pizza, chocolate covered almonds, candied pecans, salted cashews, honey roasted trail mix, tiramisu, creme brulee, shrimp or fish fajitas, apple or pumpkin or any kind of pie with custard, strawberry shortcake, spanakopita or maniraropita, cheetos & cheez-its, I am hopelessly addicted to kettle corn, and I wouldn't mind dying in a vat of chocolate (Reese's peanut butter cups, Hershey's Kisses, the new M&M Dark is great, Dagoba Lavender bars, Cadbury Royal Dark & Dairy Milk, Nestle Aero in Mint, Smarties, Japanese Apollo chocolates, Toblerone, Baci (!!!), I also like chi-chi-foo-foo chocolate too like Scharffen Burger, Fran's, Godiva, etc!), my fave drinks are green tea, double lattes with 2% milk, and Campari with OJ; playing board games - especially Scrabble; laughing heartily and out loud, preferably until I start tearing in my eyes; being the less serious, non-high-strung, un-fussy, non-controlling, un-snobby Capricorn, even tho I am super-reliable, ridiculously determined, driven, (and as we covered earlier) organised and dependable!; I am very frugal, and am good at squeezing a buck out of a penny; collecting strange things such as false eyelashes, creepy-but-cute toys, anatomical models, vintage hair net envelopes, cookie silhouettes, snowglobes, eyeshadow, kewl earrings, and other fun-filled items; it's not an interest, but I do have a very bad habit of finishing people's sentences or saying the word that are on the tip of their tongue, but just won't come out - I'm hoping that my doing this just shows those people how interested I am of what they are saying, and that I'm not trying to be obnoxious; I wear my heart on my sleeve; making wishes - I believe in hopes and dreams; last but not least, playing with my little lilac (or blue whichever you like) chihuahua, Nina Simone.

Movies:

Koyaanisqatsi, Yellow Submarine, 2001 a Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, (and many other Stanley Kubrick), Amelie, Lost in Translation, Bonnie & Clyde, Terminator (only the first one), Disney's Fantasia, The Neverending Story, did I mention Star Wars yet?, Labyrinth (hello, Bowie in tights, everyone!), Moonstruck, Mad Max, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, Yasujiro Ozu's Good Morning, Heathers, THX 1138, Virgin Suicides (and any other movie that represents how it feels like to be a troubled teenage girl), Immortal Beloved, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Amadeus, Saturday Night Fever, West Side Story, Run Lola Run, La Femme Nikita, Star Wars (I guess I didn't but I'll say it again), Bladerunner, Nausicaa: of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away (and many more Hayao Miyazaki), Polish Wedding, Kolya, Blue Velvet, Elephant Man, Wild At Heart, Persona, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy, Seven Samurai, Ran, Rashomon (and any other Akira Kurosawa film for that matter), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, School of Rock, Roman Holiday, The Straight Story, The Princess and The Warrior, A Little Princess (1995), Secretary, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Wuthering Heights (1996), Me and You and Everyone We Know, About A Boy, Thumbsucker, Xanadu, Velvet Goldmine, The Pianist, The Piano, Billy Elliot, Three Colours Series: Bleu, Blanc, Rouge, What's Love Got To Do With It?, Mommie Dearest (no wire hangers, ever!), Boogie Nights, The Shining, Carrie, Swimming Pool, Pride & Prejudice (2006), Alien & Aliens, Doctor Zhivago, Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs of a Geisha, Wings of Desire, The Breakfast Club, Breakfast At Tiffany's (cliche, I know, but still), Leon, Say Anything, I Shot Andy Warhol, Flower Drum Song, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Lost Boys, Belle du Jour, Metropolis, Bride of Frankenstein, Nosferatu, A Hard Day's Night, Flashdance, Blow Up, She Came in Through the Wonderwall, My Cousin Vinny, Enter the Dragon, Napoleon Dynamite, Man on the Moon, The Science of Sleep, True Romance, Monsoon Wedding, Little Miss Sunshine, The Wizard of Oz (seriously, I wish I had ruby slippers...), and many many more that I can't remember off the top of my head...One thing I know for sure is that I can sit through a totally awful movie just as long as the costumes are decent.

Television:

My favourite thing to watch on the telly are documentaries on whatever channel they may be on, most of the time. It could be about anything, really...just as long as I kind of learn something. However, I'm also kind of fickle/not diligent about TV shows, and tend not to follow them day-by-day or week-by-week. I just watch what I feel like watching right there and then, and if I watched everything stated here I wouldn't have time alloted for anything else in my life. Nevertheless, here's a list of shows I have watched from time-to-time: I love to watch several shows on the food network. I also like shows like America's Next Top Model and Project Runway. I also like watching indie music videos on Subterranean on MTV2. I also sometimes watch The Daily Show. Sports? I've always enjoyed watching the Olympics and rooting for the underdog! And I'm going to get over the shame and mention the show Jackass, and I think Viva La Bam is also pretty hysterical. Everyone should be watching Battlestar Galactica. New & old Dr. Who (I heart the Daleks!). I also find Life on Mars verrrry interesting. Oh yes, and Ali G. Oh, and another - Extras - that show gives me a nosebleed everytime I watch it! Have you seen The Tudors??? The costumes in it are outstanding *and* JRM is Henry VIII - though the gratuitous sex scenes in the show are just completely unnecessary & cringe-worthy. My fave documentary series right now is Planet Earth. Simply amazing. Old School shows: H.R. Pufnstuf, All in the Family, Ren & Stimpy, Liquid Television (esp. Aeon Flux), 8 Track Flashback, and who dosen't like Wonder Woman? I can't forget Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer. One type of tv show that I absolutely cannot watch are those animal rescue-style shows on Animal Planet - I get really emotional, and it dosen't even matter if they rescue anything because I get completely traumatised. But for some reason I don't get that way when I watch Cops...go figure. Oh yeah, and I love watching Dog the Bounty Hunter whenever I can catch it!

Books:

I feel really guilty not reading as much fiction as most people do...I guess I don't really read very much for pleasure... Can't believe I'm about to say this, gulp, but I just don't have time for it lately (it's true!!! I sew and sew and sew!!! That's about the only thing I had time for right now!) But if I have the time, I read mostly art criticism/theory/culture books, or a book purely for the purpose of learning something. I do find much pleasure in that, actually...(I can't help it, I'm a nerdling!). Otherwise, I do pass my eyes through a bazillion magazines on a monthly basis. My fave fiction books are The Little Prince, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, Breakfast Of Champions, I am a Cat (by Soseki).

Heroes:

My late grandmothers Michiyo & Karolina, my late grandfathers Hitoshi & Frank Sr., my Pops (extremely dedicated person, with an amazing work-ethic, who seems all gruff on the outside, but is actually a real softie and a sweetie!) my Mama (incredibly artistic, creative, very passionate, and a fun, quirky, eternally young person), I am so proud of my sis who is an amazing mother to my beautiful little nephew, my little dog Nina (who is incredibly brave, active and friendly for a chihuahua), and my closest friends (you know who you are!). The rest of my heroes are mostly people who have either persevered or died young with various energies, qualities: : Nina Simone (the chanteuse), Twiggy!!!, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Nico, Grace Jones, Kate Bush, Kate Moss, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Freddie Mercury, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Roland Barthes, Lucy Lippard, Benjamin Franklin, Cher, Tina Turner, Yoko Ono & John Lennon (together, as well as individually - Yoko is my fave visual artist of all time, and I idolised her in grad school - well, I still do but anyway), Michelle Kwan, Ace Frehley, Muhammad Ali (is the greatest), Andy Kaufman, Andy Warhol, Ann Hamilton, Bruce Lee, I don't care what you say - I think Martha Stewart is pretty amazing - so bugger off if you have a problem with that; Designers: Katharine Hamnett, Marc Jacobs, Agnes B., Yves Saint Laurent, Coco Chanel, Rei Kawakubo of Commes des Garcons, Vivienne Westwood, Betsey Johnson; cute and talented boys: Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Jonathan Rhys Myers, John Taylor from Duran Duran, Paul Simonon from The Clash, Adrian Brody, Beck; ...and et-cetera: C3PO & R2D2, Robots and Androids, Wonder Woman, Molly Ringwald (and the rest of the Brat Pack); seamstresses of all cultures; kimono makers; people who put their blood, sweat, and tears into accomplishing something that they truly believe in - people who really, really try; last but not least - whoever it is that thought up of the constellations in the sky.
