New York-based Anti-Folker, Don McCloskey (aka Big D) returns from Philadelphia with a new disc and a new band. The new album, Northern Liberties, is named after the neighborhood in Philly where McCloskey recorded and lived for three months at the end of 2006. Philadelphia's G Love produced the album's opening track, "The Beautiful Girl in the Beautiful Car," and also provides the song’s searing harmonica solo. All tracks feature Chuck Treece (Bad Brains, McRad) on drums, Philly session musician Tom Spiker (Kelis, Brentwood Estates) on bass and guitar and George Hazelrigg on keys.
Don's songwriting is at it's most potent on this album blending elements of folk, hip-hop, rock, punk and spoken word in new ways on tracks like Buried Alive, Son Of It All, Return of the Freak Emcee, and My Focken Glockenspiel. The diversity of musical styles on Northern Liberties is anchored by a sonic cohesiveness and an earnest sincerity that rings true on tracks as diverse as the up-tempo burner "Rooftops", The Beatles-esque "Lover and a Place to Hide" and the country ballad, "Sorry I Hurt You (Just Cause I Could)". The album also features Don's first songwriting collaboration, Fountain of Youth, co-written by Slackstring guitarist, Gavin Heaney. If you are a fan of Don’s already or just a fan of independent music check out the samples of the new disc by clicking on the album cover above.
One of the album's tracks "This Just In" has been picked up by mainstream rock radio in Philadelphia (WMMR) and added to heavy rotation by DJ Jaxon.
