About Me

Hello, my name is Al, i make music.I make bubbling electronic squelches, Synthesized mentalism, Big hammond organ, theremin idiocy, and add spoken word to BLACK EYE DOG. Come and see us play live. We're not trying to change the world, we're trying to start a new one. If you ever see us play you may also fall over in amazement.I control Lands Of The West. I lead them in their pursuit of mayhem.I used to play lead guitar in The Gabby Young Collective, and The Shebeats, and countless other bands. The Silent Getaway a few years ago. And Cuban Bluegrass years before that. We rocked the prince of wales and swindon college hall. I still stand by the fact that The Temple Of Bohemia is the best-named band i've been in. Or possibly the one and only performance by The Boogaloo Death Squat. The Three Stripe Hype was another legendary one.About me and my solo music:I try and write songs that i'm happy with, and that i like. I think i like good music, so writing music that i like is fun, and fun is good. Sometimes i write songs that are sad, and then the joke is on me, as i toil through my inner hall trying to find metaphors unused by speaking man.I like playing gigs by myself, and tend to shut my eyes when i perform. This gives the illusion that i fear ugly people that may lurk into the crowd, this is false. It's really just to prove how clever i am, so far i have only fallen over 8 times when performing. It also puts focus on what we in the trade call, "a certain magical quality".I am now equipped with the 'Fucked By Life' files too.come see, i'll tell all.

Influences: Every single thing influences me, whether it be the out of tune piano sound in Neil Young's track called My Heart, or the free-form vocals of Malcom Mooney from Can, or the bit in Babylon Sisters by Steely Dan where the women sing, or the bassline from Into The Mystic by Van Morrison, the madness of The Murder Mystery by The Velvet Underground, the writings of Gregory Corso, the wordplay of Ronnie Barker, the humour of Stewart Lee, abandoned buildings, the occult, people around me, Paul Gascoigne, PM Dawn, Bill Drummond, hoaxes, nostalgia, cats, alliteration. everything is an influence or you are shutting your eyes to something.
Sounds Like: someone told me i sing like Captain Sensible whereas someone else said Elton John. I think i play guitar in the rhythmic fashion of either Lou Reed or the guy from Faust, I play piano almost in the sense of it being a percussion instrument and have often played it drunk until my fingers have bled, but can also allude to the warmth of wurlitzer. my drumming is sporadically amazing but more often jerky, my lead guitar work is somewhere perfectly between Syd Barrett,Michael Karoli and total silence, my words are the most important part of my songs, taking on aspects of mallet's mallet and word association and alliterative prose, i literally have the ability to write literally as well.but that's maybe completely different to what you think.
