HoopLa is the evolution of its founding members, Amadeu Tolentino and Joshua Melvin, formally of the popular Boston-based hip-hop group III Kings.

Known in the area for their diverse music styles and use of live instrumentation, the group caught the eye of key concert promoters.
As a result, Amadeu and Joshua, as members of III Kings, have shared the stage with many of today’s top acts. They have opened for such artists like The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Common, The Neptunes, Talib Kweli, Damian Marley and many more.

Amadeu and Joshua met in the summer of 1999 in Boston’s Brighton community. Together, they began making music and soon after, formed III Kings along with friend Michael Henry (Khameleon). Through their music, III Kings expressed their desire to create unique and positive messages that would impact the world. This desire didn’t go unnoticed, as the group quickly became a much sought after act for clubs and other events.

Wanting to achieve success beyond what was thought possible with III Kings, Amadeu and Joshua decided to take their music careers to the next level with HoopLa.

Building on the popularity of their former group, Amadeu and Joshua are back after a two year hiatus with a new act, a new groove, and a new sound.

Inspired by the "hip-hop band" concept made famous by the Roots, HoopLa continues the tradition of utilizing live instrumentation as well as a DJ in their shows and in the studio. Their West African and Caribbean influences can be heard throughout their recordings. Their rhythmic expression combines live acoustic guitars, surfacing bass lines, and worldly percussion rarely heard in hip-hop.

With a new hybrid of music and some of the best live shows in the business; HoopLa is positioning itself to become a major player in the music industry.
