About Me

i play drums and percussion in a few groups in a few different genres of music. i've been tooling around with rhythm instruments since i was 3 (as far back as i can remember.)
mom was a former performing artist who sang song stylist classics in front of a big band back in the late 40's early 50's. an officer's club in guam employed her where she performed. that's also where she met my father who was a captain in the air force. her music career came to a halt as they traveled the world military style and started poppin' out babies in the usual catholic fashion of the era.
i'm the youngest of six children. we all had piano lessons at some point in time in our lives. she started me out when i was 8 on piano alongside my 12 year old sister. i did that for about 2 years until i decided i didn't want to anymore. my sis and i both despised piano lessons so naturally she thanked me for protesting against any further instruction. from then i didn't touch anything musical or rhytmic until i was 13.
i met my best friend to this day jeremy beson in 1983. we were both little skatepunk kids who liked hardcore punk bands like youth brigade, black flag, d.r.i., the adolescents, m.d.c., circle jerks, etc. he was a damn good guitar player in those days of that style of punk music. my natural gravitation toward drums had me playing proficiently at a very swift rate. we teamed up with our bass player/mutual friend brett shell who was also nicknamed....."bubblehead." together we formed the group d.s.o.r. (a horrible acronym for demented sounds of rage.) ha ha! i laugh everytime i think about it! anyway, we started "crossing over" to a more metal punk style as we were listening to bands like corrosion of conformity, metal church, verbal assault, metallica (kill 'em all hell yea!"), etc.....at this point i had adopted a double bass drumkit. we played together for some time. never played shows. we just got together at this kid trent pittard's house who owned a half-pipe in the neighborhood where everyone skateboarded. we were background music. pretty cool. this all came to an end in around 1987 or so. i stopped playing music for a while........
1994 had me reunited with my friend jeremy beson, (now a bass player), once again playing in a band called the martyrs. this music was acid jazzy. over time i guess we had developed a little more sophistication in our musical tastes, (although i'm still a punk at heart), through listening to the jazz infused hip hop of the time. lots of guru, groove collective, brooklyn funk essentials, solsonics, james taylor quartet, etc. anyway, i started picking up on latin rhythms preferably of the afro-cuban variety and was now playing congas instead of a drumkit. the martyrs split after about a year or so. i met dj radar in that group and he and i continued recording and playing live together. through him i met dj z-trip, and dj emile. the three of them formed the infamous bombshelter dj's. i played live percussion for these break and hip hop dj's at local arizona spots called "the green room" and most popularly "nita's hideaway." it was during this time that i became further fascinated by these obscure percussion instruments. i obsessed incessantly at developing the skill required to play the rhythms designed for these types of drums. luis hernandez, dom moio, e.j. rodrigues, giovanni hidalgo, emilio caruso, eric udell, changuito, jerry gonzalez, and more peops became my teachers and influences both literally and through mere listening. soon i acquired timbales and bongo for my repertoire.
in 1997 i joined a band called the hammertoes. this was to be one of the more serious projects of my musical career where i teamed up with singer/songwriter casey wade and songwriter bob jacks to take on the title of rhythm captain. or later as i was coined, "the drum nazi." ha ha! that always makes me laugh! this band utilized a lot of afro-caribbean, polka, and odd meter rhythms over tom waits, velvet underground, and david byrne like songstyles. we tackled a vast vocabulary of styles both rhythmically and musically. it was quite the 6-year musical adventure i will never forget or regret.......a moment of silence please......
during the latter half of the hammertoes existence, i started delving back to my hip-hop roots by continuing to play live with dj ztrip and also lending my percussive services, (live and recording), to my now commited in full-time band the drunken immortals. we are an underground hip-hop band outta az. you could compare us to the roots, the crown city rockers, cinematic orchestra, or antedote, if you wanted......but don't get it twisted.....we are more of ourselves than anything else! word....
other groups i play in are "shh! the baby's sleeping" experimental, "moustache war" (formerly "the threads") indie pop, singer/songwriter "jody gnant" indie pop, and a new drums, turntable, and live art trio i'm very excited about with dj pickster uno and dumperfoo called "crusher soundsystem." catch our debut on december 13th 2007 at the blunt club.
enough about me! what's goin' on in your world????.......
