About Me

Politics , The Coast , Live Journal "Your reviews are fucking great" - Joseph Kahn, director of TORQUE. I am a man of many hats, techniques and styles. Also, I hate waterslides and old people in grocery stores.

My Interests

Bureaucracy

I'd like to meet:

Hector Boyardee. I mean, what's up? That name ain't Italian.Otherwise, anyone really. Unless you felt the need to list your yearly income on your profile. Or conform all your beliefs to (and define yourself by) a convenient political dogma. Most crucially, no white people. But I love everybody.

Music:

Just music that pitchfork.com tells me is cool to like. And indie rock bands, depending on the degree of emo flop of their hair. I also think these artists are ok (but don't tell anyone): Fishbone, Weapon of Choice, Funkadelic, Blood Sugar, Bad Brains, The Smiths, Mos Def, Soundgarden, Bjork, Ice Cube (esp. pre-1994), David Bowie, Julee Cruise, Primus, Kelis, Marilyn Manson, Dr. Madd Vibe, assorted Mike Patton bands, The Smashing Pumpkins, Prince (older stuff), Secret Chiefs 3, Joi, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Movies:

Only movies you've never heard of, and ones made by Antonioni. Fellini is too mainstream. I also like to namedrop Kubrick as often as possible so people think I'm very informed on matters of cinema. Beyond that, I can TOLERATE: Vertigo, Blue Velvet, AI Artificial Intelligence, The Night of the Hunter, Rashomon, Persona, Carrie, Phantom of the Paradise, House Party, ET, Nashville, Torque, Taxi Driver, The Wicker Man (1973), Mars Attacks!, Touch of Evil, The Gold Rush, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, LA Story, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (old version), Back to the Future, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, Argento's Opera, Babe: Pig in the City

Television:

I want to be one of those people who goes around saying, "I don't watch TV." But then I would be both culturally out of touch and a liar. I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Veronica Mars, The Office, Survivor, and Beavis and Butt-head.

Books:

I never learned to read. But if I ever did, I feel I would probably like The Resistance: 10 Years of Pop Culture That Shook the World by Armond White, Dune by Frank Herbert, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Devil's Candy by Julie Salamon, Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke, The Trial by Franz Kafka, and The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

Heroes:

My parents and my god and my dog. And Steven Spielberg.

The Day Cora Tried to Kill Me

On Tuesday, I went for breakfast at Cora's restaurant with my friends Jocelyn and Peter. This excursion was an experiment based on an idea. I wanted to decide once and for all whether I hate Cora's, a...

Lessons in pop history

It seems there's no Wikipedia page for McPizza. I once convinced somebody that the crust to that stuff was made out of filet-o-fish.But I was reading the history of the McDLT and OK Soda today. The be...

I went to see FAST FOOD NATION tonight, as I'm guessing it's on its way out of town Friday, and I have premieres lined up the next two nights. The movie is a narrative take on the non-fiction Eric Sch...

GNR concert

I admit I'm pretty excited about seeing Guns N' Roses (aka The Axl Rose All-Stars) tomorrow night. I don't listen to them much anymore, but was a pretty big fan in my jr. high days. GNR was the first ...

For the kids

Since The West Wing ended, the only thing my parents routinely watch on TV is news and newsmagazine type shows. I follow the headlines enough to know what's going on. But really news media is just its...

Mark Palermo reviews... CURLY SUE!

The last entry in my overdue project of watching every movie John Hughes directed in order, CURLY SUE is also the only one I hadn't seen before. Warmer and less crass than its reputed to be, the film ...

The Incredibles & Superiocracy

Something has always bugged me about THE INCREDIBLES, a movie I basically like, that I've tried to articulate a number of times. I just ran across this webpage where the author does a very good job of...
