Damn That DJ Made My Day!

About Me

The details of my life are as follows:
When I was in middle school my friend Marty had a Run-DMC tape that he let me take home to preview. Since the trailer walls were so thin, and I had my ghetto-blaster cranked-up to 9, my parents, too, got to hear "Proud To Be Black" for the first time. My dad stormed in, took the tape out, took it back to his room, played the entire tape for himself, then he gave me a list of the songs on the tape I was allowed to listen to! My initial thought was to respond, "pops... you be illin!" but I wisely choose not to. What did come out of that situation was my intriguing love of hip-hop. For a while, all hip-hop was "underground" to me out of necessity; LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Heavy D & The Boyz, Biz Markie, N.W.A., Special Ed, Tribe Called Quest, Leaders of the New School, De La Soul, and Black Moon... just to name a few.
While I was busy listening to imported mix-tapes from NYC radio stations, and fine-tuning my love of Hip-hop, I couldn't help but start to appreciate the Rock & Roll my Dad was continually blasting out of his turntable. I heard the original rock songs that a lot of my favorite Hip-Hop songs sampled, and I was AMAZED!
When I got into college, I realized that my unique love and appreciation of music was also a way to make money. I started working multiple jobs JUST to have enough money to buy records on a weekly basis. After months of collecting records, I accumulated enough to be able to start rocking parties on a used pioneer house-system turntable, a brand-new Technic 1200 turntable (that I bought with the money my grandparents and parents gave me for Easter, my birthday, and Christmas), and a Radio Shack mixer I bought from a friend.
My very first DJ Gigs were $30 parties that I did for my friend Phillip, and his Alpha fraternity brothers at neighboring Longwood College. It was then that I knew that I was in this for life. I started making mix tapes fusing Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B and turntablism on an old Yamaha 4-track. I had the first Hip-Hop radio show in the history of Hampden-Sydney college, and I started the Urban Promotions Department. I became my station's General Manager. I DJ'd at multiple colleges, in the community, and on the radio for four years. I opened for acts like The Lost Boys, Phife Dog, Black Moon, The Pharcyde, and DJ Kool. I was taking DJing to the next level.
Despite the fact that I was gaining a lot of popularity as a DJ and "budding" Hip-Hop producer, I chose to pursue a career in banking (since I graduated with a degree in Managerial Economics). My career path lead me to Atlanta (where Booty-Bass was prevalent) and it became increasingly difficult for me to justify buying the Booty-Bass & Puff Daddy Records that people wanted to hear at parties, so I went on hiatus for a while.
After a year at the bank, I transferred to Raleigh, NC, where I soon realized that my passion was music and radio. After six months, I quit my job and became a Remote Engineer/Promotions Coordinator at WRAL-FM with the goal of being on the air within one year. My hard work paid off and I was doing weekends after just one month of employment. I soon worked my way up to being the Executive Producer of the Bill & Sheri Show on Mix 101.5 and I got back into DJing all over the state of NC.
After being at WRAL-FM for six years, I realized that it was time to take my radio career to the next level so I went across town and joined the Bob & The Showgram on G105 / WDCG as the Executive Producer / Air-Talent. Since then, Bob, Kristin, and I have become the NUMBER ONE Morning Show in Raleigh-Durham, and can be heard by over 300,000 people at any given minute each morning between 5am - 10am on G105.1.
