Introducing 'The Deviant Minds'

About Me

The Deviant Minds spent 2004 hard at work writing new material and building their reputation for performing an exciting live show while playing on the road and opening for such national acts as the Suicide Machines, The Movielife, Bleed the Dream, H2O, and Most Precious Blood, among others. With their Northeast tour and intense Internet presence, The Deviant Minds have assembled a strong fan base outside of their native Pittsburgh. In early 2005, The Deviant Minds decided to test their boundaries in order to introduce their music and energetic live performances to a whole new audience, relocating the entire band to Orange County, CA
The Deviant Minds trace their origins back to early 2001, when cousins Dan DeSantis and Billy Urban paired their unique musical backgrounds and began writing music together. Needing a voice to compliment their sound, the two recruited Dan's brother Casey and took to the stage as CBJ. The trio pulled the money together to professionally record their first EP, ?Oral Dilemma?, in the summer of 2002. The single from ?Oral Dilemma?, Destiny?s Call, began to get major airplay on local stations 105.9 the X and 97.7 WLER, while garnering more than 1,000 downloads from mp3.com.
The band?s sudden success made it clear to all the members that this was more than just a part-time gig and in late 2003, Casey left the band to pursue other interests. After intense searching, Billy and Dan Brian McDade whose heavy, Tool-influenced style easily earned him the title of permanent drummer.
Their new lineup crystallized, the band began to write again in anticipation of their next recording, aptly titled ?Reincarnation.? In January 2004, another CBJ single, Point Nine, began to get major acclaim and airplay from the local radio station circuit. With the buzz surrounding Destiny?s Call and Point Nine, the band caught the attention of Todd Morse (Juliette and the Licks, H2O). After hearing Undertow, the single from ?Reincarnation?, Morse immediately signed on to produce a three song demo.
?I come home from tour with piles of demos. Most of them sound good but are void of great songs,? Morse said. ?Each time these guys have given me demos there is always an amazing song included. It takes a lot for me to leave L.A. to produce a band, but I smell a hit in Pittsburgh. It's just a matter of time."
With a fresh demo in hand, the band was ready to introduce itself to the music world. But a new identity was needed to capture their creative direction and harder-edged sound. Fate interceded in the form of a dream.
?I was walking down the street and saw ?The Deviant Minds? on an old theatre marquee.? James said. ?The image burned itself into my brain. It was sort of an epiphany.?
Confident with their new identity and ready to make a splash in Southern California?s music scene, The Deviant Minds are focused on the future, announcing summer shows in some of Los Angeles? most famous venues, including the Whiskey A-Go-Go and the Viper Room as well as scheduling a fall West Coast tour.
