BIOGRAPHY
Sathern was formed in 2005 as a solo project by guitarist Nick De Beer. Concepts and ideas for this project varied from Symphonic Black Metal to a Melodic genre. Nick’s lightening riffs and razor sharp talent for song-writing was predominant from the beginning. The music was written solely by Nick and he published his finished works through self-production. These were largely Internet marketed. In 2007 saw the addition of Sven Madlener on drums. His speedy blast beats, fast fills and mathematical double-bass came as a welcoming part in the band. Cover tracks were the first stage when writing went under way. Both members agreed on a path for the band musically and were happy that a Symphonic Black Metal influence was indeed a great one. The need for an additional guitarist was very quickly addressed and a search went under way. Josh Chettiar was added to the line-up on 2nd guitar in mid 2007 and additional writing commenced. Influenced heavily from an aggressive musical background, Josh brought a ‘rawness’ to the band and gave Sathern more room to work with faster riffs. As the band progressed from being a single, solo project to a basic line-up the need for vocals was apparent and once again a search went under way. After auditions were completed Sean Hendry was placed in the line-up and the band now had a voice. Influenced by a Black Metal background, Sean’s vocals range from highs and lows to the ‘growl’ that is so consistent with this genre. Sathern is currently searching for both a keyboardist and a bass player. Auditions for these roles are currently under way and an expected recording is scheduled for early 2008. Information about the recording or related issues however, is not available.
Sathern’s music can be described as Symphonic Black Metal with an aggressive touch. Influenced throughout by bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom, Nightwish and Ensiferum, the music itself is fast, paced, melodic and superbly styled. Without trying to ‘fit in’ or ‘be part of’ any sort of genre or sub-genre, Sathern inspires to create an atmosphere where the listener can feel the melodic presence but have a brutal attack of speed and aggression at the same time. Eagerly awaiting a recording from the band, Sathern looks very likely to revolutionize the platform of metal in this country.
